Why are there no good space opera games?
Mass Effect 1, and (so I hear) KOTOR.
some space rpgs where you can fuck robots would be fun. we need another binary domain.
>>729697727Infinite space is exactly what you are looking for.
i think its time to rewatch BSG, its been like 15 years
>>729697727Pretentious. It insists upon itself.

>>729697727this show really jumped the shark
>>729697727Because as soon as you mention a game idea for visiting different places in space you'll have a dozen retards going>yooo what if you had a space ship and you could go like trucking from place to place IN SPACEand then you make 50th shitty Freelancer clone nobody wants to actually play
>>729697727Mass effect, Xenosaga, rogue galaxy, outer worlds 2

space is fake and gay
>>729697727>good space opera gamesThat's literally what Mass Effect was before the original writer left after ME2Play ME1 and ME2, and pretend the rest of the franchise doesn't exist
how did boomerlenials stand this shit? its so boring, couldnt make it past the second season

>>729697727Xenosaga
Hard scifi > space opera
>>729702656FTL is a very simplified version of Star Trek.
>>729697727Xenosaga.Wish more sci-fi JRPGs actually used Space as a significant part of the setting instead of just hopping from planet to planet.
>>729697727People are too obsessed with muh hard scifi these days where aliens and ftl are too "unrealistic" now which is why all we get is bland shite like Starfield, Expanse and Exodus.

>>729703507basically an alpha version of mass effect 2
>>729703656Nah ME could've been a modern take on SC2 if it leaned into planet exploration more with the second game but instead it went hard on the narrative aspect instead, sigh what could've been, thats why ME1 is still my favorite of the series.
>>729703602i really don't think BSG got hit by the strike at all. maybe it floundered a little post-reveal of the cylons, but i think it had more to to with changing the focus of the narrative than bad writing. it stabilized once the transition from the opening arc to the closing arc was done.i think most of the hate comes from the final bit about earth which really just comes down to personal preference
>>729703752planet exploration in ME1 was kinda ass to be honest. shifting focus from auto-generated worlds to human-made content was the right call.
>>729703078>only humans because ayys are too far away and if they're included they're some octopus looking shit because humanoid ayys is too unrealistic >takes a bazillion years to get anywhere because no FTL so everything just takes place in one solar system>everyone lives on space habitats or under atmospheric domes because earth like planets are too rare, far away and technically wouldn't support human life anyway because they don't have the exact level of oxygen and gravity we need >no epic space battles because they're also unrealisticnah its shit

>>729704072That's just hard sci-fi through the lens of a dying civilization so morally corrupt they're more concerned with the appearance of it than actually having any. There's simple solutions to all those problems but they'd rock the status quo so much one can't really envision them ever happening until after civilization recovers from total nuclear war and the gay retards are all gone.
>>729703078Hard scifi = pretending the space magic makes any sense.

>>729704669I always loved Larry Niven books because he always hit the perfect balance between hard and soft scifi.
>>729703078No and the vast majority of what people praise as hard sci fi doesn’t actually follow hard sci fi conventions. They both mog cyberpunk tho, the drooling retard of science fiction.
>>729704754Firefly fucking sucked.
>>729704795no u
>>729704754Firefly is barely even scifi they literally had people in covered wagons and using six shooters with laser pewpew noises to make it seem "futuristic" lmao.
>>729704790Thee Body Problem is hilariously goofy and the author obviously intended it that way, but redditors think its terrifying hard sci-fi cosmic horror.
>>729702196This show absolutely did not end gracefully. It was the proto-Game of Thrones.

>>729704703Why wouldn't you fuck your sister? I do agree that the extra dimensional shit could have been handled better though. Still, there were some nice scenes leading up to the end with various people you met along the way.
>>729704995It felt awesome at the time when I was like 16-18 but aggressively 2000s edgy as fuck so hasn't aged the best.
>>729702196The most graceful thing about BSG was when they suddenly needed to make the show longer, so they introduced a fucking retarded retcon (The real life constellations we know around IRL Earth actually point to a planet that isn't IRL Earth, so we still need to find IRL Earth!) and churned out an entire season worth of depressing misery porn.
>ENTER
>>729704926Retardation. The sophons alone are well outside hard sci fi limits. Let alone some of the weapons and shit introduced in the sequels. The trisolarian civilization and anatomy is also not grounded in science

>>729705250>pop culture reference doesn't even make sense in 2025>why don't these aliens understand me???i'm sure it was funny when it aired and you could only catch a random episode here or there
>>729704976>go ahead and list your grievancesIt's been over a decade since I last saw it, but I vividly remember the character assassination of Admiral Adama in the last season on top of absolutely bonkers plan of "technology bad!" risking the last of humanity by throwing all of their tech into the sun regressing to the stone age for the flimsiest reason, while also using the battlestar skeleton crewed on a suicide mission for a single fucking baby. This isn't even touching on the fact that they landed in sub-Saharan Africa of all the places to choose which was inhabited by spear chuckers who were coincidentally genetically compatible and the direct implication they were our ancestors that got bred out of existence.I remember really enjoying the show overall despite having some weak seasons, only to have one of the worst endings for a TV show I've witnessed up until GoT. Sadly it's been so long I don't remember every specific detail but that show is forever on my shitlist right there with nu-trek.
>>729705145I was around 18 or 19 when the final season was airing. Watching it (and LOST) with /tv/ was kickass.>>729705615Don't ever forget that Baltar got away with betraying humanity.

>>729697727>All White people and one token Asian girlWow, right away you just know that this is at least a 15+ year old show, because you will never find any piece of Western made media with a cast like that ever again. It is also unintentionally realistic, since Whites and Northeast Asians are really the only ones intelligent and competent enough to create space faring civilizations to begin with.
>>729705765Not my fault the literal ending scene is them staring over the horizon to a bunch of homo-erectus with their pointy sticks, man.>>729705735That too.Fuck BSG.

>>729705615It's almost as if you can put an 'o' in bred and say that they got bored out of existence. Really changes the tone just as much as Adama shitting himself due to old age.Really one of the many reasons why S5 is so unfathomably bad. Not as if contrarians would help change our minds. But at least we can all agree on one thing, it's this: BSG S5 is not Stargate S8 or Star Trek TNG S7.

>>729707851it was him that was cancelled, not the shpw. he was replaced by another character
>>729707495They did... in the end. The Final Five wanted the Cylons to branch out and find their own path, but the Twos endlessly seethed that they were made in humanity's image, as a tribute to God. They felt their form was confining, and as machines they could accomplish so much more if they weren't restrained to the bodies they currently have.So rather than modify their bodies or download their consciousnesses into more synthetic bodies the Twos rallied the rest of the humanoid Cylons to take revenge on the Final Five for their flawed creation. They created clone bodies for the Five with modified memories to make them believe they were human, killed them to download them into their new bodies, then sent them to live among the human colonies to experience the "weaknesses of humanity". Their intent was for the Five to die during the Fall of the Colonies, so that when they would resurrect again they would get on their hands and knees and beg the Twos for forgiveness, acknowledging them as right all along. But that's not what happened. The Five survived the Fall and continued to fight against the hostile Cylons despite their missing memories, and the sole member of the Five who regained them (Ellen) immediately resumed her previous stance of being penitent to God and to work in harmony with humanity, infuriating the Twos. In the end, the hostile faction was destroyed, the surviving humanoid Cylons populated New Earth with humanity, and gave the Centurions their freedom to explore the stars and find their own path. They may one day return to New Earth, but it won't be for a while yet.

>>729708407Haven't read books but I hated what they did with Martians. >>729704848>Firefly is barely even scifiYeah, apart from the eponymous spaceship that's central to the story, terraforming, spacesuits, holograms, automated advanced med-bay, massive space battle in Serenity, the Alliance uniforms mirroring Starship Troopers', gravity drives, etc. etc.
>>729709037thats exactly what happens in the books.... so their whole thing is creating a new earth in mars, terraforming it. BUT with the opening of the portals and habital worlds at reach, their whole purpose for centuries is lost, the martian identity is lost, some factions want to still terraform mars, others see it as pointless now, thats how you get the laconia faction, theyre the ones who have given up on the old world and want to forge their own future in another ready made planet. The next seasons would have focused more on those martians now called "laconians"
Owlcat isn't making what I want so I'm not looking forward to The Expanse game. Exodus has a Concord/Mass Effect Andromeda vibe, so I'm not that impressed with it, probably won't play it. Intergalatic looks like trash, and I don't like anything Naughty Dog makes, so... not playing that. Disney killed my interest in Star Wars so I won't be playing the Kotor remake. I'm a bit miffed about there not being any good (new) space opera games, but I'm in no hurry to play one either, I can keep waiting for the right dev to come along.
