I think the pog reactions to this are really a symptom of the fact that 3D graphics has been a failure for bringing concept art to life. The idea of concept art being what you base the 3D assets off of is flawed, rather than the concept art simply just being the literal game environment. The translation to 3D assets loses insane amounts of character. Of course a good director that's autistic about the game's art style makes this a lot better, but it's still never the same. You just don't get the same feeling as the concept art.

One part of the problem that I'll mention is because there aren't good or mature rendering techniques to reproduce the look of linework. Even when you do cell shading, textured brush outlines on edges, etc, it still doesn't quite look right. And that's because you can obviously tell it's not the lines of a brush but the artificial rendering algorithms of a computer. This is also why voxel/pixel graphics are kind of interesting, because the unique character of pixel art styles is naturally low fidelity, such that you don't get the issue of needing to reproduce impossibly smooth yet imperfect linework. Therefore it is easy to render without feeling like a flawed attempt to emulate drawn art styles. If only studios cared to do voxel graphics, as in true voxel graphics, not Minecraft types of voxels.

Anyway maybe AI style transfer tech will solve all this, hard to say exactly when that'll be consumer-ready.

I'm still not convinced people want accurate 3D euclidean space. I think scale should warp unrealistically depending on where you are to exaggerate for dramatic effect. I think people want to go into areas that are much larger on the inside than the outside conveys. The whole "no loading screens" shit ruined a lot of the magic that old 3D games had imo. But yes I also agree we don't want PBR lighting, everything should be vertex painted by hand to convey the feeling just right.

A lot of classic 2D games (at least the ones considered good looking) had very detailed backgrounds that while not accessible gave the impression of a larger more interesting world. Similarly, some earlier 3D games had nice sky boxes to give the impression of a larger world beyond the boundary of the playable area.

99.99% of modern 3D games have completely abandoned this and have a "what you see is what you get" type mindset. There's nothing beyond the boundaries of the game so ironically despite playable game areas being larger, the worlds themselves feel much smaller and more boring.

I think that's another interesting thing, yeah. There was some attempt to do non-euclidean art styles, at least for characters, with stuff like Live2D Euclid, and of course Arc Sys's games. The next step as you're suggesting would be to do that for the entire environment, so it feels more like the kino shots we get in 2D mediums. It's a detail that might be lost on developers of AI models, but I think it's definitely possible to make models do it (assuming we do ever get good, real time style transfer models). But they probably won't, because the developers aren't as autistic as you or me about art.

While we're on this topic, I think another issue I'd like to mention is the framerate/motion blur/smears problem. Monitors can't yet stimulate the retina in the right way to produce natural blur for moving objects. Rendered blur is also not eye motion-matched so it's annoying. And smears are hard to do on 3D models. This will be another challenge to overcome if we want to reach true sovl in game visuals.

I guess you're getting at a more fundamental issue about interesting game visuals in general. I was more talking about idea of game visuals conveying the exact feel of concept art, which is related but a slightly different issue actually. It's possible to make polygonal 3D graphics that look kino and can compete with 2D art. But it's its own style. It's not (trying to be) the feel of concept art except moving and intractable. And so even if we lived in a world where all games had really unique interesting styles, there would still be a missing hole for the idea of "concept art but it moves".

Avoiding situations that need physics, especially soft-body and fluid physics, helps. Avoiding characters and organisms showing up at all, helps.
