The atmosphere is meant to be unnerving but the appeal of this romhack is the exploration and getting lost while finding areas of interest
Occasionally you will see something spooky and it will stick with you but those moments aren't as common as you'd be led to believe

Biggest differences are some levels, red star locations (mostly gained from bosses in Official while found in various places in Unabandoned), and I think more red coins/silver stars in UA vs Official. I'm maybe a bit partial to UA but both are fine I'd say.
