I just realized the analog clocks in Robocop Rogue City are synced to your system's clock (EST here, probably 10mins before the thread was posted) It doesn't make any difference in the game whatsoever, but the fact that some underpaid Pole was inclined to program and debug a wall clock for what could have been generic Unreal licensed slop brings a little light to my soul.

This ain't exactly a TECHNOLOGY thread, but anybody else wanna share examples of little details in games that amused you or otherwise demonstrated the devs gave a shit?

I remember there was some indie game that people were getting pissed off because it inadvertently doxxed them if they were streaming it because a flag you see at one point changes to display the flag of your own country.

The US equivalent would be if people found out I live in New Jersey
So what, are you gonna air strike my house or something

>it inadvertently doxxed them if they were streaming it because a flag you see at one point changes to display the flag of your own country.
How the fuck would a country's flag be enough to dox somebody, even the smallest microstates have enough computer users for plausible deniability.

Or was this like an X thing where it revealed most of the vtubers and streamers pretending to be white and Asian were actually from India lmao

Boring answer but flavor text for stupid objects like fire hydrants and cabinets in adventure games always pleases me

The hidden rankings in Hitman Blood Money.
The game normally gives you a ranking based on how 'loud' your mission was and how many kills you make. But the game never mentions that there are hidden rankings you can get for beating the levels in specific ways. Just about all of them can only be gotten using cheats, since you won't have enough specific ammo or poison needles or w/e to pull it off.
So that means the devs sat down and not only fucked around with cheats to figure out how many different ways there are to clear a level with cheats, but then spent the time creating custom rankings for each method that can only be acquired by the players cheating. Oh sure, some players might stumble across the Garbageman rank by killing everyone in the suburbs and feeding their corpses to the trash truck, but how many are going to take the time to needle down every single NPC? Or try to kill everyone with the Nail Gun? This is a good deal of effort and polish put into something only a small fraction of players will ever see.

The Hitman series is full of this stuff, not just the WoA series but little details going back to Silent Assassin at least.

Speaking of which, I have a pretty shit memory for details but 2:SA had a whole mechanic where guards would have a harder time identifying you while disguised if they couldn't see your face. So many years I hear people bitching about how 2's detection meter is broken but 70% of the time you could avoid being caught just by staring at a wall when a guard walks by except on those fucking Japanese levels where stealing a ninja outfit meant guards would still wave you down from a mile out
>>
>>729705924
IIRC, it worked that way in Contracts as well. At the very least, I noticed I could sneak by guards easier if I was angled away from them instead of just trying to walk by them. It's a good mechanic which makes logical sense. Of course a guard would notice a stranger wearing a uniform, but the uniform from the back could be any of the guards he knows.

is it really? i know there are a lot of games that sync clocks with your system time but isn't 10 and 2 the default clock stock image time?

In Sinisister 2 theres a place near the pig farm that looks very similar to the generic screen you have to crouch in castlevania 2 to advance when you get the red orb. If you crouch there for a few secs you get a lot of gold. It felt nice that in a H game someone decided to code a little homage to the OG of the genre.

Lemme see if I can find a clock in the police station to check consistency, but I stared at that clock move for about a minute before I took a screenshot, and the filename Nvidia gave it includes a timestamp that matches up near perfectly with the hands' position.

Okay here's another screenshot, notice how the the seconds and minutes hands match near perfectly with the filename. I'm sure it's not really that difficult for the devs to implement and there's probably pre-configured "real-time clock" assets you can buy in the Unreal store or whatever, but it's still enough to make me go "huh, neat".

Also I really need to find a better default photo viewer than Microshit's, especially as I start transitioning more and more to Linux. Tried Irfanview and Faststone but both had UI quirks that restricted their use to niche cases
>>
In Phantasy Star 2 or 3, I can't remember which one, there's a series item called an Escapipe IIRC that warps you to the last town/dungeon entrance you visited. Near the start of the game, you can get one and try to use it to escape from a prison. If you do so, the king berates you for trying to skip ahead in the game, and either sends you back or forces you to reset, I can't remember which. Was nice they thought of that detail.
What makes it confusing is they forgot about it later on, and you can use that item to skip the middle third of the game entirely in a similar situation.
>>
>>729708694
Shouldn't be too hard to access the system clock, it's one of those things every OS makes easily available to programs. But yeah, it's not too often devs actually use it. At best you usually get just the system time and date on the main menu, and even then it's not that common.

Reverse Collapse keeps track of how many times you've loaded a save, with the implication being that every time you've done so prior to the final boss was a failed bad end timeline that's doomed forever.

That’s Phantasy Star 3, and you brought up the only memorable thing in that boring and buggy mess. Crazy how the Genesis had no good DQ-style JRPGS except Phantasy Star 4

On that note, I learned something neat about Phantasy Star 1 on the Master System recently. Its convincingly 3D first person dungeons are rendered entirely using lots of tiles pre-drawn at every angle, which isn’t surprising if you are familiar with 8-bit systems. But the neat part is that the programmer made a separate 3D wireframe viewer for the artists to use as a reference, which is why the perpective is so accurate compared to its contemporaries, and it runs really fast because the bottom and top halves of the dungeon view are simply mirrored versions of the other.

Agreed. Caves of Qud is pretty good for this. Every mundane thing has odd flowery oddball flavor text.

Something as simple as a box of crayons says "Wax from the hives of Odrum is mixed in dye and moulded to the shape of styli. Together in the box they sample the iridescence of the world and offer the tools to expand it."

And on with every piece of furniture, every plant and animal, tool and edible. It does kind of feel like a game written by a freak salt desert prophet.

The game was CPU bound because crytek didn't foresee multi threading becoming the norm, and with all devices at the time being dual core and whatnot, coupled with the fact that YOU DON'T HAVE TO RUN A GAME AT MAX SETTINGS meant you could play anywhere.
Fuck off zoomer, go back to watching twitch.

In Deus Ex, if you kill a woman, pick her up, and toss her body, she always lands face-down and her mesh changes to flatten her breasts just a little bit. It's impossible to notice under normal circumstances, but if you toss her on a staircase you can see it.

Also in cp77 there's an animation you get when you get a gun for the first time with V looking around it, I like how if you double tap triangle instead of single tapping to draw your gun you can see that animation again, its something new from 2.0 I think but its really a nice little addition

The steal kills in evil within 1 making an electric sound and the animation being as if you are yanking the cable that links people's brains to the STEM out.
In bloodborne if you choose the yharnam sunrise ending and begin ng+ sometimes the plain doll will be at the grave from the ending cutscene praying for your characters "other self"
In armored core 6, if you play through all three routes without completing the tutorial and doing any arena battles amd wait until the final boss of route 3 to do them all, allmind remarks at how weird it is you never did any of them up until this point.

All of the unmarked stashes that there were in stalker shadow of chernobyl. I even made a massive album locating almost all of them with ingame screenshots. Also how some of the best artifacts, the ones that basically let you infinitely sprint, have a unique spawn condition of being in electro anomalies but only from 12am to 6am and if you have entered the area at a that time. You could get a flash artifact in cordon and at least one moonlight in the agroprom tunnels.
