Games with wacky control schemes.
Give me one good reason why all game journalists shouldnt get the rope.
>F to melee attack
>>729708820It makes sense because I yelled Fuck! when I wallop the bad guy a new one. What letter Fuck starts with? Not middle click that's for sure.
>>729708820It's amazing that it's on the eve of 2026 and still like 80% of PC games don't even think to add mouse buttons as a default control for anything. I played a game this year that I can't recall that actually had melee on mouse 4 by default. Blew my mind.
>>729708735this is terrifying. Imagine aiming with anything other than a mouse
>>729708820F is short for "FITE ME DEN PUSSY!"
>>729708896you must be brain dead to believe everyone wants this
>>729708896One thing I liked about monster hunter world was exactly the mouse controls support.
>>729708820>middle mouse button to melee
>>729708870then it should be n
>>729708946Does everyone want melee on F? Does everyone want coruch on C? Does everyone want inventory on fucking I?Doesn't stop the devs from doing it. Might as well use the fucking buttons absolutely every mouse in 2025 has.
>>729708946More people would use M4 for melee than fucking V or F like a good 60% of PC games do today
/threadGame would be fucking amazing if the controls were sensible and remappable (the most important keys you cant remap)
>>729708896Bf6 won't let me bind mouse 4 but will let me bind mouse 5, on the other fucking side of the mouse what a shit game
>>729708958Nuck? What's that? You nigger.
>>729708974
>>729709021Something is wrong on your end nigga, I have melee as m4 on BF6.
>>729709058chinasaar hands
>>729709016Shut up we're talking about what key we use to punch now. You want to get punched outta thread? F.
>>729708735
>>729708735i sincerely hope the poor college student who wrote this shit got to see it and knows their work has been meme'd for decades
I prefer ,AOE
>>729709167Lol
F5-f12 are all worn off
>>729708735I played Metroid Other M recently, and Samus having what she does change based on how you hold the Wii remote was pretty wack. Makes quickly hitting anything with missiles almost impossible.
>>729709491Wait what? Like the controls change if you're holding the wiimote differently like up or down or something?
>>729709438>8 taunts>0 "fire weapon"max level banter
>>729709438>has 2 buttons for winning
What do you people use these 2 for
>>7297088102 stick is cancer for fps, so I'll give him a pass
>>729709824Nothing because my thumb will randomly hit them due to parkinson's.
>>729709167is that GUN?
>>729709824ctrl & alt for extra mmo hotbars
>>729709167
>>729709824flashlight and melee
>>729708735This is literally what we called Turok style controls back in the day, and lots of games had them, though usually as an optional secondary control scheme. How the fuck had this guy not heard of it back in 2000?
>>729709962No it's some pretty bad but soulful third person shooter from the xbox 360 that I don't remember the name of.I know star_ and jerma played it one time for a video.
>>729709824changing dpi
>>729710018how about a title BITCH
>>729708735>>729708810Unironically correct. Dual analog is a garbage control scheme and it relies heavily on simplification, for valid targets, their trajectories and directions to look in, as well as heavy assistance from the game if it wants your cursor to actually stay on anything. Not only is the game simpler, but unlike a game where you don't need to pretend to be a competent cameraman 24/7, you can't even use the face buttons for anything and the game needs to rely almost entirely on the shoulder buttons, cutting your input options practically in half.Dual analog has practically killed most genres it has touched, not just FPS games.
>>729709573you hold it sideways to move and the ir (pointing at screen) to switch to first person to shoot missiles. The fact the game is barely even playable and it isn't even the games worst feature, yet the metascore is higher than prime 4 just proves how worthless review aggregators are
>>729709124Z, X, O, K, space was pretty standard for European computer games.
>>729708735Honestly they were right.First-person shooters suck ass on consoles because this became the standardized control scheme.
>>729710092I just told you I don't remember the name of it, doofus.
>>729709824ctrl and windows/superI use a tiling desktop on linux so having the modifiers on my mouse lets me manipulate windows one handed
>>729709824Grenade and melee.
>>729708735> F to go forward> B to go backward> L to strafe left > R to strafe right > C to crouchWhy wouldn't this work?
>>729709021you're trying to bind a button when you're clicking the area where the game thinks you're binding a keyit's kind of stupid but after you figure it out you realize you're the one that's stupid
>>729710256What do I use for my flashlight?
>>729708810the uhhuhh
>>729709573In addition to what >>729710136 said, you can also hold the wiimote up so it's pointing at the ceiling and this will cause Samus to stop moving and when you press A like that she'll recharge health and ammo.
>>729710140yeah somehow two pair keys for movement was the standard for keyboard back then. the reverse (Q,A,O,P) were also common.
>>729710275You mean pocket torch?
>>729710108That's more the fault of controllers not putting the face buttons on the back. Every controller scheme leaves at least 4 of your fingers sitting around doing nothing.
>>729710446>That's more the fault of controllers not putting the face buttons on the back. Wouldn't fix much, the core issue is that free camera does not belong on a controller that only has dual analogs.>Every controller scheme leaves at least 4 of your fingers sitting around doing nothing. It's called holding the controller, not everyone has sticky palms. Even with back buttons you can't use all your fingers.
>>729708735remember, journos have always been complete fucking retards
>>729710275T for Torch
>>729711013B for beacon
>>729709824push to talk
>>729710685>>729710446Having standard back paddles would be great, but unless your controller is from fucking snes you have triggers/bumpers and you do need at least one finger for gamepad stability and even better 2.
>>729708896>but what if mouse has only 2 buttonslazy ass PC faggots devs are to blame just as always
>>729710685>>729711147If you're holding the controller then your palms and fingers are wrapped around it. Putting buttons for your unused fingers on the back isn't going to make you drop the controller or lose stability. Just move your palms on each side together slightly.
>>729710446>the face buttons on the backThat sounds like actual aids.
>>729709824Forward and back. I use a controller for bideo games on PC.
The default move/look controls for Daggerfall are a little fucked up (pictured in orange). I honestly have no idea why they though this was a good idea.>Arrows keys: Move forward/back or turn left/right (Doom-style)>Insert and delete: Look up and down>Left shift to strafe left, right shift to strafe right, hold ctrl to strafe left or right using arrow keys>Run (P), Jump (J), and Crouch (D)>Sneaking on alt>Page up/down: Swim up and down
>>729710320That was because 8-bit computers (C64, Spectrum etc) didnt have proper cursor keys.
>>729708974Everyone wants Interact on E. And Attack on E. And Pick Up on E. And Spit on E. And Open Inventory on E.It's E all the way down.Or F, but only one or the other not both.
It has a steep learning curve but it actually works well once you learn it.
>>729709824Depends on the game, but any action that I need to be able to do quickly. Melee attack, throw grenade, use medkit, etc. In some games I put functions I do often, like toggle flashlight.
>>729709167>>729710018>>729710092>>729710183Holy hell. I haven't thought of this piece of shit in 15 years. It's called Damnation.
>>729709824accidentally going back in your web browser while in the middle of a webex job interview
>>729708735what control scheme would have satisfied him? try to imagine you're moving from PC to a dual stick controller for the first time in your life. what other movement/aim control would you even expect?
>>729709824For Fps games, two side buttons, up+down MW, MW button, give some access to five different guns to quick switch.
>>729710108>why didn't the t-ford have abs, auto gearbox, gps or decent audio? what a shit car.
>>729708870Wasd deez nuts
>>729709124
N64 had the same thingPeople would go crazy when a game would use the C-pad for movement when it was obviously the better way to play and almost analogous to keyboard and mouse
>>729709167Lmao reminds me of practising this shit
PSX is the most disgusting forced zillenial shit I've ever read in my life
>>729713781Everyone called it that in Sweden, cope with it >t. 86
>>729713839No one gives are shit what Muslims think
>>729713474Mouse and keyboard already existed and so did mouselook.Dual analog as a way to constantly control the camera was obsolete for several years before the dualshock even came out.
>>729713930It's one thing to criticise modern xbox games for lacking gyro or whatever but to be pussy about PS and ninty64 not having m&kb input is very silly
>>729713891Shalom
>game thinks numpad are F keys>can't map modifier keys like shift + key you want to press
Mouse side keys suck because they throw your aim to the left when you click them.
>>729711880but why the far separation of the pair, and not something easier like WASD or IJKL? even >>729713636 had the idea of keeping them close to each other.
>>729708735what the fuck that's completely unplayable
>>729711880Even ones that did like the Apple ][ had them in retarded layouts. That said, keyboard control for games on one of these computers is retarded, as they had built in joystick ports.
>>729708735He's right. I've never learned twin stick and never will.t. boomer who proudly never learned how to beat the first level of Mario 64
>>729709707heh
>>729709824Accidentally hit them and do something unexpected, then unbind them.
>>729709824I only used it for browsing until I started playing titanfall 2, then started using them universally for crouch. Can't be bothered to hit ctrl while going full-on monke on the walls.
>>729714706on the other hand, why did we give up a nice big ctrl key to... caps lock?
>>729710183>doofusVery cheeky of you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2-8mhdDHdg
>>729708735That is crazy. Both your thumbs are busy, how do you even shoot?
replayed re6 recently and zoom was caps lock
>>729715080Ctrl is used heavily, and putting it in the middle like that is uncomfortable. When a second meta key was added in Alt/Command, it was ridiculous to have them spaced like that.
i remember plane nitro in just cause 3 was impossible to decouple from accelerate, despite every other vehicle letting you do this. Which was really a problem when nitro only recharged when you weren't holding the nitro button.
>>729709824One of them's just an autoclicker and the other i almost never use. Autoclick's real nice for RCT.
>>729708820>R to unzip your pants
>>729708820>>729709058what is the optimal keyboard control setup?
>>729714086It's not particularly silly. Those games were perfectly cognizant of the fact that they didn't have a good input to control the camera in a fully 3D game, so they either didn't try or designed around it in a way that didn't sacrifice gameplay for LARPing as a cameraman. This is a game that was designed in an era where people knew that this was a bad control scheme, so they didn't use it. This only started to become an issue in late 6th and 7th gen once licensed engines started streamlining dual analog cameras as a design choice. If their controller is bad at doing something, then they shouldn't make a game focused around doing that thing and should leave it to mouse and keyboard or design a better controller.>>729715773>Press E to blink
>>729709824melee and push to talk
>>729708735Before fps we Disney have the control stick option also hated it when it came out. I got used to it now it feels normal. I wonder what the best type of control scheme would be had devs allowed people to change the controls
>>729708810It wasnt the hardware that was hosting games back it was the journotlist.Never forget what they said about us gamers when gamer gate happened. Gaming journalism is curropt and is not a reviews anymore it's all a sales promotion. Also theres no real gaming news there no leaks all game news are just controlled promotion for games. Gae jurnolism isnt real or true. I bet sports journalism is the same. They are all in on it and only talk or speak or write about thing they are told to do or else they will never get a given things
>>729709016They'd need to fix a lot more than just the controls. The game's just plain fucked.
>>729708870My middle mouse button is broken for a long time and there are plenty of games that don't let you rebind mouse buttons
>>729709058I saw meta had this wrist things that would feel what you're typing what no make a controller with that type of technology. You would just make a physical controller that has no connection to the pc or console and you just let the device feel your input. If such a thing happens we will not have to worry about strain or the buttons fucking up.
>>729709824nothing I dont have them
>>729710016full 360-look around fps were rare on console and devs and players alike were fumbling in the darkaylmao resurrection came very close to what is now considered as 'the intuitive default'
>>729709058I'm left handed so I can use my thumb to hit CTRL. I have to use the base of my palm for Spacebar though
>>729718108>My middle mouse button is broken for a long time and there are plenty of games that don't let you rebind mouse buttonsBroken or just needs to be cleaned?
>>729708735The old Armored Core games with the reverse controller grip the japs memed into reality.
>>729709824Currently playing GAMMA and I have them as night vision and the fire selector.
>>729708735Console first person shooters were barely playable until 6th gen. It took Halo to show everyone how it was done.
I press in the middle mouse button to reload, reloading from R just feels stupid, the mouse should be your gun
>>729712729>Once planned as a third-person adventure game, the long-delayed adaptation of the latest Alien film has finally arrived as a completely different beast entirely. Now a first-person shooter, the game ends up being the closest thing you'll find to the company's well-received PC FPS Aliens versus Predator. But those expecting that same level of quality in this title will find that, in the space between the final days of the PlayStation and the launch of the PS2, no one can hear you scream.>As in the film, the action takes place in a spaceborne remote military research vessel that has been overrun by aliens. You make your way through the chaos, encountering survivors, wasting face huggers and drones, and collecting an inordinate number of key cards along the way. And make no mistake about it, the way is dark. It's dark in the sense that graphical glitches are likely being hidden, but the darkness also sets the atmosphere very well. Lights flicker, steam blasts from wall vents, and scripted events such as an alien bursting through a doorway play out in cinematic fashion all around you. The audio effects - such as the frustrated squeal of a vanquished enemy or the quickening beat of your heart when you're near death - also contribute to the mood as well. The audio and video elements work well, save for some fairly chunky animations and weak screams. All in all, the visuals and sounds end up more fitting than impressive.
>>729710191>I use a tiling desktop on linux so having the modifiers on my mouse lets me manipulate windows one handedWhy would you need to do that one handed anon
>>729718616>The game's control setup is its most terrifying element. The left analog stick moves you forward, back, and strafes right and left, while the right analog stick turns you and can be used to look up and down. Too often, you'll turn to face a foe and find that your weapon is aimed at the floor or ceiling while the alien gleefully hacks away at your midsection. Add to the mix a few other head scratchers - such as how the triangle button controls item and health use - and you'll be wondering how Sony let this get by without requesting a few different control configuration options.>Beyond the control issues, Alien Resurrection is gruelingly hard. That is, it's hard to the point where you'll spend as much time reloading your save file as you will spend playing the game. The near-mythical PlayStation mouse peripheral is supposed to solve many of the game's control problems, but the 99.9 percent of PlayStation owners who've never even seen the device will find the game almost unplayably difficult to control and unreasonably hard to enjoy. It's a dramatic answer to a problem far more easily solved by adopting the control scheme from EA's Medal of Honor.>Fans of console first-person shooters or the Alien film series will probably be better off waiting for Fox's recently announced Aliens: Colonial Marines for the PlayStation 2. While no concrete details have been announced for the game yet, this is one instance where the unknown is preferable to the devil you know.
>>729718393Yes.
>>729709824I always imagine they'd be so useful, then I forget they exist.
>>729718575>t. watched a youtuber review Goldeneye 64
>>729714706The Amstrad did it better, but you still had to put your palm on the number pad. QAOPSPACE made sense if you consider the people using these computers were used to typing: Q and A for the left hand, O and P for the right, SPACE for one of the thumbs.
>>729715819Depends on the game and what kind of buttons you need to press but I'll give you a broad idea of what I preferwasd - movementq,e - leaning or additional hotkeys for weaponsz - healing or weaponx - weapon or itemc - weapon or itemv - weapon or fire rateb - binocs234 weaponsf - interact or weaponr - reloadt - journal` - inventorytab - mapcaps lock - very dependant on the game i'm playing if I even use itshift - sprint unless its something like stalker then its low crouchctrl - crouchalt - dodge, sprint if there is no dodgey - chatm4 - meleem5 - interactdpi "sniper button" push to talk
>>729709167This has got to be some shitpost, there's no way
>>729709438I memberI also member that the button for shoulder mounted weapons was unbound by default for some reason
>>729710108Literally every worthwhile game from the last 25+ years has been made for dual analog controls. No one cares about arenaslop shooters or whatever dogshit you worship, retarded boomer nigger
>>729709824I rebind them with my mouse's software to Page Up and Page Down. Far, far more practical for day-to-day use, and easily rebound in almost every game in existence (usually for reloading).
>>729712729left stick controlling forward-back and turning, with right stick controlling look up-down and strafing. no joke.2.5D FPS games on one stick or no mouse usually had a control scheme with one joystick/dpad that moved you forward-back and turned left-right, with strafing inputs relegated to some other buttons.so when FPS started going full 3D where you needed precise aim up/down controls, there was a period where the left stick had the old behavior and the right stick had the remaining controls tossed onto it. which results in this abomination, but it somehow works for people used to the old ways, which is why even now you have games that allow for this control scheme
