Players are railroaded into sneaky archer by design. Bethesda recognized the core issue with the awful feeling level scaling in late-game Oblivion. It's because level ups are tied to class skill advancements, and eventually your combat class skill progression will start to plateau. This means you'll eventually start getting levels that are only utility skills and not combat skills, which means the enemies will scale to be stronger but the player won't. If you focused on utility skills over combat skills with your build, then you'll experience getting out-paced by scaling much earlier on. Skyrim solves this by effectively making every character have the same build. Melee and archery skills were prioritized, where's everything else was simplified and reduced. This means everyone will subconsciously play a fighter that picks up a little bit of magic for bonus AoE damage and utility. The fixed round numbers for HP gains on level up also ensures everyone is appropriately tanky.

If you actually played it, you very quickly realized that 99+% of it are completely worthless fluff, cobbled together randomly from a small handful of actually designed components. If anything, Morrowind afterwards proved that no amount of randomly generated quantity can measure up to handcrafted quality. Daggerfall's entirely model was a dead end from the start, at least with the technology available at the time, and even now. Give AI another decade, and maybe it'll be at a point where a Daggerfall-esque game can exist and not feel like trash.

Mercantile was a genuinely shit stat that serves no purpose in any game that doesn't inherently have mechanics regarding running a store. Bartering can easily be rolled into Speechcraft, which is what Bethesda did. Even in DnD, Charisma is the primary modifier for discounts.
