How does Dark Souls hold up in 2026?
>>
>>729794327
i like dark souls because the world and creature designs are good, the gameplay is ass, the multiplayer is gay, the story is basically reading item's descriptions.
>>
Instead of saying trash telegraphing rollslop say
>the boss attacks have no rhyme or reason to throw you off and make you memorize arbitrary weird timing which is genius design actually

It's still a great game even today.
It's similar to how Castlevania 1 filters people who can't comprehend an attack having a delay or a jump that you can't control once it starts. Using a Lloyd's talisman on a player early game is a hilarious every time when you see them try to drink and fail, it may cause a player to check their items closely for how and why that happened to them, which I think is a great way to encourage experimentation in the pvp, and it's fun that there's lot's of weird niche options like muting your movement or playing Prop Hunt with an unexpecting player.

The worst thing about Dark Souls and it's sequels has always been how easy and broken backstabbing is. It's kind of cool that for pvp you have a weakspot that you have to protect but the game can be so laggy that it ruins it.

>>729794327
In remastered when using a gamepad, running in certain directions switches to walking. It drives me nuts. Can't find a solution.
>>
Whats up with the zoomer-memes that Gwyn is a joke boss? Most people who played through the game didn't parry him, parrying was just a minor part of some builds. Now everyone acts like everyone goes through Dark Souls 1 just parrying everything and thinks its a parry game.
>>
>>729797590
It's unironically people just forgetting that they probably almost never parried the first time around and find it much easier to understand the parry timings when replaying.
I did end up realizing on my first playthrough that parrying gwyn made him a lot easier though.
>>
>>729797590
>Most people who played through the game didn't parry him
What the fuck are you talking about? Literally everyone just parried Gwyn to death.
>>
>>729794327
It's a generational masterpiece.
>>
>The combat is deliberate and methodically paced
used to be true, now its just rollslop
>The world is interconnected
dark souls 1 is the only one that did it right, but dark souls 2 ended up being the best one even though it did this the worst
>the final boss brilliantly subverts the player's expectations
nah its a joke, always been in all of them
>>
its all of those things and then some
>>
>>729797590
Gwyn is a mediocre boss regardless of if you fight him the easy way or the hard way, he has like 3 moves and they're all super basic attacks and a grab. He's just a suped up hollow. But it works thematically because the "ending" is literally you getting scammed by the actual villain, the primordial serpents, and the game is designed around the idea of the covenants becoming your "meaning for persisting" in the dead world.
>>
>>729797584
Sounds like a problem with your controller deadzones. I had a similar problem with elden ring where I couldn't move the camera full speed.
>>
>>729799069
What the fuck are YOU talking about? Maybe everyone that watched hours of video "essays" before booting up the game. First blind playthrough of Dark Souls, no one is parrying or even rolling (if they went in actually blind). If you played the sequels before (retarded) then yeah, the whole game is a joke, not just Gwyn.
>>729794327
Arguibly the best game of the decade and one of the most influential games of all time.
>>
I only tried Demon's Souls on the PS3 but couldn't really get into it, is Dark Souls different enough to warrant a try?
>>
>>729799584
Maybe Dark SOuls 3 is more your game, you fucking idiot
>>
>>729799584
no, they are all copies of demons souls.
>>
>>729799584
It's very different from it, but probably not in the aspects that turned you off Demon's Souls. You should try it regardless.
>>
>>729799261
This is admittedly a bad hitbox, but it's funny the people who complain about the game being "clunky" are ALWAYS using ultragreatswords
>>
>>729799469
>First blind playthrough of Dark Souls, no one is parrying or even rolling (if they went in actually blind)
I agree about the parry part on gwyn specifically (most people wouldn't even think to try this) but the roll part is silly, everyone knew how to roll, many classes don't even start with a shield and those that did inevitably forgot to upgrade it and swap off it eventually
>>
>>729794327
>How does Dark Souls hold up in 2026?
It is still the only good game ever made.
>>
>>729799469
Did you forget that soapstone messages were a thing? Even if you didn't learn it by discussing the game online or otherwise, all you'd have needed to see was a "try parrying" message. DaS parrying was also incredibly easy since unlike every later game the active frames started instantly with no delay, so you didn't need to be remotely skilled to be good at parrying.

Poorly.
It's the stomp clap hey of videogames.
>>
>>729799584
Dark Souls feels like a ripoff of Demon's outside of the level design, and it's painfully unfinished. If you didn't like Demon's, I don't see any way that you would enjoy Dark Souls after Sen's Fortress (~halfway through the game).
>>
>>729799975
I can only tell you what I personally felt about parrying
>try it like 10 times on the first hollow in the tutorial where it tells you how to do it
>finally get it right
>figure "wow this isnt enough payoff when I can just kick then kill the fucker"
>never parry again for the literal whole game, even if messages tell me to
>>
>>729799261
Gwyndolin requires all his knights be castrated before joining
>>
>>729800782
NTA but I can tell you my experience learning dark souls back in 2012
>first major roadblock at OnS
>don't know the speedrun route to them yet
>figure I have to deal with the silver knights in my way
>decide to learn parrying so I can dispose of them consistently
>learn the timing then and there
but it is as you say, its not worth doing on shitty enemies as you can just kill them, but then you face a black knight and suddenly parries trivialize them
>>
>>729799584
I never finished Demons Souls because I got bored of it, but I have beaten Dark Souls multiple times. You should try it.
>>
>>729801052
it's fair I just wanted to point out not everyone parried gwyn to death. I just didn't think of it is a valuable tool at the time so I just fought him normally
>>
>>729794327
get good
>>
>>729794327
shit game and it's consequences has ruined gaming for an entire generation
>>
>>729799261
>that filename

>>
>>729794327
Still the last game worth a shit From released, ARPG is such a dogshit genre.
>>
>>729794327
It's a Eurojank dungeoncrawler, so it holds up much better than its successors, which were all just attempts to scam Namco Bandai out of money.
>>729801602
The only reason that Dark Souls 1 even took off is because gaming had been going to complete shit for years prior to that point, with every company chasing the lowest common denominator by pumping out yearly releases of slop that literally played themselves.
A game that needed some kind of longterm memory, critical thinking and pattern recognition beyond mashing an invincibility button for journalists was a breath of fresh air.

Name a harder regular fight in the basegame than Gwyn

it's still the best souls game
i would rate ds1 > ds2 > ds3 > bloodborne > demons souls > elden ring

>Had the self control to turn the swamp area into a lava world
>Every game after it could not help but splooge a dozen filler swamps everywhere to fill the gaps in cut content
>>
>>729802542
DS1 > Elden Ring > DS2 > Bloodborne > Demons Souls > DS3
>>
>>729802202
Ornstein and Smough, Four Kings, honestly that's about it. There aren't many hard bosses in DaS. But Gwyn is mediocre more for his moveset than his difficulty.
>>
>>729803207
Sure, especially for modern standards Gwyn is not much. But he has slightly longer combos than other bosses in the game, and the iconography and theme elevates it.
>>
>>729802542
Armored Core VI>Elden Ring = Bloodborne> Dark Souls = Sekiro> Demon's Souls >Dark Souls 2 = Dark Souls 3
>>
>>729799727
>ultragreatswords
ultragreatswords are clunkier in DS2 because, among the numerous other issues that game has, ultragreatswords sometimes just forgets your entire animation or your inputs is and just swings down forward

it's not something really coherent, it happens like only 25% of the time

lmao DS2 is such a piece of shit
>>
>>729794327
Install DSCM to restore online functionality
Install remastest mod to turn your copy of remastered into PTDE
Remastest also makes the game fucking amazing and better than any other souls

how do you stop tiny men from hitting your butt?
>>
>>729799779
>>729799975
Hard disagree about the rolling. You eventually figure it out, yes, but for a large portion of the game you don't have the necessary knowledge of the mechanics to use rolling correctly, unless you looked it up online or have a keen eye for action RPG games. You could roll, but you probably wouldn't have the equip loads figured out nor would it make logical sense to expect invincibility frames on a game like Dark Souls.

>but it's good actually

lol, absolute morons
>>
>>729794327
But nobody complains about that third thing on the left to begin with, at most they complain about the corpse runs, which isn't really backtracking
>>

I've literally never heard of the weird thing you complained about

Go play dark souls remastest mod
>>
>>729802542
This is unjustifiable unless you're ranking purely on personal nostalgia.
>>
>>729802467
I always found it really cool that the city itself is inside that giant dome you spot when first entering the area
>>
>>729794327
I honestly haven't ever liked DS1, it's the only one I did not enjoy for the most part. I don't really understand why it has such a cult classic status above the other souls games, other than socially I guess which has nothing to do with me.
