If they watch several popular youtube videos of their character or the faction they belong to, then that's already more than most expect of them. Now, the actual writers have no excuse and should play the game(s) at least once. S2 is only three episodes in and it's struggling with keeping the lore and characters straight, though blame is probably on Bethesda as well for refusing to just pick an ending to NV, thus giving us this actual mess of factions just being there like static objects.
