Hold up, could I really write off all the video games I buy as "business expenses" if I became a video game streamer?

Would I actually have to make money at my "business" or does it still count as a business even if I'm a failure and no one watches my stream. Cause if it's just a tax thing, making money doesn't matter. What does making money mean? Do I have to make more money than I spent on expenses, I.e, being profitable? Or does one person sending me $5 count as good enough?

Cause I spend money and play video games either way. Maybe I could finally put into motion those ideas I have for a youtube channel or something.

This is about video games. It's more about video games than that thread.

What do you think "write off" means?
It doesn't mean free, fyi.
>>

I'm a streamer and I don't bother doing write offs because they're more effort than they're worth most likely.

Keeping receipts isn't really that much effort. I already do it because I'm a doordash driver. So you just make dumb decisions. That's the sort of laziness I expect from a video game streamer honestly. If you could do anything right you'd have a real job.

I think you have a time limit of five years to start making a profit. Or something like that.

yes anon, write off means the government is giving you free money even if you have an income of zero

Yeah man, I want to be the ones writing things off. That's the goal. It's time. I want all my meals to be "business meals" because I talk about video games when I eat or something.

I think it means a tax reduction in an amount equal to my spending. I think it means a tax refund if I create enough deductions so that they government has to pay me instead of me paying them.

But I am not a tax expert.

>equal amount
lol no
it's just going to reduce what you owe by a percentage, not a fixed amount.
even then, it's going to be limited based on your income
>>

Then it will be a percentage. I stated outright I am not an expert in these matters. I still consider it somewhat beneficial to entertain the notion. Since I buy video games anyway, there is no real loss. This would be a bad business idea if I did not enjoy video games or aimed to actually be profitable. That is not the case here. I buy video games either way.
