None of the characters have direct analogs, the cast dynamics are completely different. I guess the computer techs under Ritsuko are similar to the 6O, 21O and operators in general
Model 9 (was that his name?) and Shinji's Mom pulling some elaborate keikaku in the background is a massive reach considering that I do not believe model 9 even comes up in the fucking game, only in the play.

I would have to rewatch Evangelion but from what I can remember about it there is no way that Automata is a "retelling" of Evangelion besides sharing some basic ideas.

On 2Bs route, you can only really judge 9S based on dialog, and for a lot of side quests it is 9S who takes the lead does all the speaking.
On his own route, because you play him, he obviously feels more assertive and based on his solo sections in the beginning and during the start of the 3rd Act, I don't really see similarities with Shinji.
There is also the whole aspect that all Shinji can do is pilot EVA while 9S can do hacking which gives a whole own dimension to dominate over in a way that 2B can't.
His incelrage also feels different to Shinji's.

Shinji in my mind was more often lethargically depressed, where 9S felt naive to apathetic or outright nihilistic.
Again, this could all be because I have forgotten a lot of stuff about Evangelion and my impression of Shinji is wrong as a result.

Personally not a big advocate for remakes but going from playing Replicant to Automata it is a bit of a whiplash losing the full voice acting.
However my main desire for one is that Automata would benefit a lot from additional chapters that actually fill in the story.
Visiting Lost Shrine or playing as A2 during Pearl Harbor could kino, but I am not sure how you would fit it in with the rest of the story flow.
Would have to be added at the end of Act 3 or something.

Back in my day this all could be added in an Expansion pack, but the industry doesn't really do those anymore in the same way.

Multiple time he pretty much saved the mission, including the introduction battle where he sacrifice his own memories of meeting her so he can save her
It's gameplay logic but the second route is essentially showing they operated together as equal.
He is very friendly with 2B unaware the reason she is so cold is that she has to kill him over and over again as he discovers the truth.

Frankly I don't understand why Yoko Taro would mention "copying" Evangelion as other than incredibly vague concept drown in his own works.
I almost suspect he just wanted to attract attention.

Rewatching NGE just for the visuals

Hard is probably the wrong word for that.
To borrow the amount of money you need for a full studio you need fame, a reputation good enough they don't imagine you failing.
And a game director is not necessarily a good editor.
Plus he would have to find other talents who aren't already working for big studio.
Kojima did that but that's because he already carried Konami in all but name, when he left talents followed him, he still had to pay a license for a new game engine, and if it wasn't for his style/meme, many can consider Death Stranding to be rather poor on a technical side (vehicle physics is just plain bad).

In any case you are a retard if you think that's easy.
We live in an era of independent developers, and we hear all the time about teams crashing because of a weak link, and almost no one manage a game of the technical level as say, Nier Automata.
