Sword and sorcery and anime aren't mutually exclusive. Besides, S&S genre games are pretty much all made by westerners anyway, who rarely use an "anime" aesthetic. Look at Skyrim or Baldur's Gate 3, two games that are much closer to Sword & Sorcery than than anything anime unless you mod the shit out of it.

>>729809594
The context of that quote is young Conan anyway, a barbarian hedonist who eventually becomes a king and family man after slaying and fucking his way through a bunch of adventures, and not Howard himself talking about his personal beliefs.
>>
>>729810409
I mean yeah lots of warlord types get shanked. Conan can't exactly get a investment portfolio in the Hyborian Age. It's not really a peaceful time, and there is plenty of demand for armed idiots without fear of death to go fight the river warlock.
>>
anime is pulp you are just being exposed to the worst of it constantly
>>
>>729809414
>>
>>729809414
I feel pulp slowly faded away and was replaced by high fantasy inspired by Tolkien. Vidya has been taken by dark fantasy inspired by Dark Souls.
>>
>>729809594
>implying not killing yourself because your mother died isn't relatable for many anons.

>>
>>729809772
They still exist, they just changed form. The thing about "pulp" is that it was always low-effort trash. That's where the name even comes from; these were stories that were only printed on "pulp" paper instead of in regular books because they were meant to be cheap shit you read on the train or whatever.

The modern equivalent would be self-published ebook exclusives, of which there is an incredible plethora. What people usually mean when they say "pulpy stories" is probably specific genres like Sword & Sorcery, Space Adventure, or Noir-style detective fiction. And there's plenty of that being published in low-effort ebook format still. It just probably isn't sitting on a rack at the gas station.

Hey wait a second, are we even talking about video games? I thought I was on /lit/ for a second.
>>
>>729811857
pretty much this. I can't think of any good anime about sword and sorcery or pulp. I watched Lodoss thing a month ago and it was very bad. Terrible overhyped trash by people who don't know anything about the genre
>>
>>729811857
yes retard they expose the worst of it all the time. I don't want 'slime princess transported to another world where she is god of leveling otaku'; I as the based consumer want more berserk or fist of the north star. It wasn't. Many classic science fiction authors published in pulp novels: Arthur C. Clark, Ray Bradburry, Paul Anderson, Doc Smith, Philip K. Dick. Clarke's stories form "I, Robot" collection were first published in Super Science Stories and Astounding Science Fiction. Not to mention early fantasy authors like Howard and Leiber.

You probably moved away from the thread but I have two answers:

# 1 is called Dark Axe with a charming PS3-styled graphics where Conan returns to Granach Village, finds it raized, and then doggedly pursues those responsible similar to the 80s movie. Has a combo system, enivornmental hazards, short narrated cutscenes where he's called half man half animal, and two women who play hard to get.

He ignores them both. Has sex with one. The other cries her entire life she missed out.

Second option is NOT about playing as Conan but really fits the rags-to-riches scenario + has the largest (and imo best) portrayal of Hyboria to this day.

Age of Conan. I truly and honestly recommend that game if only for the 9/10 tutorial are (Tortage) which is fully voice acted, has a few quest with multiple options, four class-specific storylines and is short enough to do in ~5 days of average playtime.

Beyond that the game drops to a shitty 5/10, unless you like the setting which makes it a 7/10 for me.

Extra selling point: there's very little diversity so if you choose to exclusively kill Scandis, go to Cimmeria. If you wanna kill browns, go to Stygia. If you wanna kill asians, go to Khitai.

Turan, Vanaheim, Aquilonia and the ........... uh pirate Island from the Momoa movie are also features, but they aren't that content-rich.

I stopped playing after killing Toth about 3 years ago. Not sure about the state of the game rn but you could get raid groups going

The problem is the actors and actresses' looks that kept the image for this kind of thing going died out in the 80s. I can't even remember the last time there was a real 80s build protag, male or female. If there's no visual memory to tie it with, it's harder to sell to the normalfag crowd

Which will never happen because creatives don't really have a say in the comics. Whether you're a writer, artist or colorist, you're just hired for a job. Company still owns everything and business guys don't really understand creativity. It's sad because in the US every comic that's not about capes essentially has to differentiate itself as GRAPHIC NOVEL just so people don't go "oh, you mean superheroes?".

Yeah, as a long time comic fan, the simple truth of the matter is that current marvel and DC just aren't very good right now. DC's better at the moment but all of it is pretty far removed from where they were at their heights. And Marvel is determined to cut their nose to spite their face. The big problem though is that because of complicated decisions made a very long time ago even the good outlier comics like the current Conan book don't get the same market share as the big 2 so love it or hate it the comic shop lives and dies on them. It's all a very frustrating and depressing set of affairs.

Yeah, he did. And he also wrote all of this great shit before he even turned 30. An incredible talent, respected by a lot of serious authors of the time for his abilities.

A lot of people think he killed himself because of his mother's declining health and that he felt trapped with her and his responsibilities. That is understandable. But I don't think that's what it is. I think he couldn't reconcile our gay, faggoty world with the fertile world of endless imagination he could so effortlessly create and put to paper. How could you not be massively depressed when the world you write is so much more interesting than ours? Also, a lot of writing about that world serves as a direct criticism of ours.

He could've written anything. Instead, he just wrote what he wanted. I legitimately believe that he is as good of a sentence-to-sentence English writer as has ever lived. At the very least, he is the undisputed king of action sequences -- he writes with such violence but also such clarity. There is almost zero of the confusion that creeps into other authors' depictions of combat or action sequences, nor an overreliance on technical terminology.

Anyway, read Robert E. Howard's Conan stuff. You won't regret it.
And I hope they make more games that feature characters like his favorite protagonist.
>>
>>729822908

i don't like either medium but that's because i'm a grumpy old man. i think western comics could gain some ground by actually appealing to the audience(s) most likely to give a shit. j-shit is loaded with shounen and school dramas while most western stuff is about adults grappling with weird sexual issues.

>El Borak is a Western adventurer who is equally at home in the deserts of Arabia and the wilds of Afghanistan, and who uses his quick wits, expert marksmanship, and fighting skills to navigate a dangerous and treacherous world.
>One of the things that makes El Borak unique among Howard’s characters is his ability to operate in both the Western and Eastern worlds. He is a Texan by birth, but his travels have taken him to places like Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India, where he has learned to speak several languages and gained valuable knowledge about the local customs and politics.

The biggest issue with comic media now is simply, its gotten far too big and extensive for anyone, even the hardcore fans to follow. From there you get people doing things to keep it fresh, while alienating each fandom and generation before that. Someone who grew up reading 1930s Superman comics would be confused by 1960's Superman comics and so on and so forth. There isn't one universal canon, defining identity for any character now. New supporting casts will be added, retcons or reboots will happen and eventually you'll be back to the same place you were before.

That is not only not true it's stupid. Comics used to be written in a way that anyone picking up a new issue could follow along just fine. Very few people who read comics were from the first issue. If you ask anyone of my generation or around then they'd tell you that they started reading some popular comic well into the hundreds. I still remember my first Spider-man book. Pic related. I had NO trouble following along even though it was in the tree hundreds. I don't know what it is about this current generation but they're the only ones who panic when they have information they aren't immediately told ahead of time. A long running comic used to be appealing because it meant the book was healthy. Now comics rebrand and renumber yearly to new number 1 sales but diminishing returns.

Its very true, and you're likely an autistic outlier. No I don't mean that offensively, autistic people just have a hard time understanding anything not in their own sphere or bubble, even if actual children can grasp it. Sure (you) might have an issue and the internet age allows people to learn things quickly, but people will see a character namedrop an event or arc, that was a callback to another event or arc from several decades before (in-universe its only been 3 months), then wonder how thats relevant to the main story, which is also a ripple-effect from a crossover that branched out into 50 different books, all with different quality of writers, artistic talent and story. At a certain point it also becomes nothing but empty filler, serialized soap-drama that repeats itself endlessly until humanity dies out.

And the comic would have a little box that would say CHECK OUT THE ISSUE NUMBER so they made it easy to find out if you wanted to see it but other wise it wasn't necessary to understand the current story. Context clues were abundant and literal children at the time could figure shit out.

The two aren't mutually exclusive. There are people who legitimately, unironically do not understand the appeal, and that would not be an issue unless they have tribal mentality of "who is not with me is against me"

While normal people are concerned with being cringe, or get hit with "I have a boyfriend" the functional retards band together by a natural feeling for each other.

THEN you have others who notice this, and take advantage of this. By making life shit, people want to buy shit to feel good, and by making everything worth buying shit, you get dissatisfied customers who keep buying. Or at least, this is what "they" thought would happen.

We're seeing a resurgence of Chad and Stacy we haven't seen in the past 40 years. If it's visible even w/o official support, imagine the actual ground level support

The fact that something like COIE happened in the 80's no less or Rebirth, New 52, various renumbering and rebrandings by Marvel because the stories and world got too big for their britches, disproves that.

These books are so fucking terrible that if you read all 30-something of them, you will end up with profound mental retardation. Some of the worst writing I've ever been forced to experience, particularly the entire books written from the slave girl's perspective. The author is an absolute degen freak and the entire series reeks of "I'm going through a bad divorce."

Considering these stories were about sex, violence and escapism, I'm not sure they were very popular with the boomer right-wingers of the time.
Like someone else said ITT,, they were very "feminist", but yesterday's liberal is today's right wing.
If liking (stories about) boobs, violence and (anti)heroes is "nuclear family content", it's because one side has made it clear they want nothing to do with it

which is extremely gay for a sex, drugs and rock'n'roll person who grew up in the 80s

Anime was closest to pulp back in the 80s and early 90s. The OVA market really reminds me of the whole "Weird Tales" pulp magazine scene, and in terms of vibe, stuff like Bubblegum Crisis, Ninja Scroll, Megazone 23, and Slayers (technically light novels and a TV anime, but whatever) scratch the itch in a very similar way.

In today's society, you don't have to write to survive.

It's partially this but he also wrote extensively and talked to many others about how disgusted he was at how corrupt and depraved the world at large is and how he couldn't do anything to solve it. He felt powerless against the evils of society, so he wrote about heroes strong and removed enough from it to fight against it. Growing up he got in a ton of trouble because he would actively look for and beat the shit out of bullies and assholes and he couldn't stand that they were tolerated and that HE was being punished for stopping them.

>>729827912
I agree with the notion of anime having been much better overall in the 80s and 90s, but it's worth mentioning that these comparisons often look at relatively high budget OVAs from the 80s and compare them with weekly TV anime from the modern day. I'm a big fan of 70s mecha anime, and I readily admit that there's a ton of cheap and recycled animation to be found there.

That said, even when old anime is cheaply animated, the art style is on-point, and you're more likely to find very creative worlds and stories than you are nowadays.

I agree with you. Howard had a special way of drawing you into a scene, he could communicate much by saying little, it is a special kind of pull that few writers could put into their work. One starts out by thinking his writing simplistic, but as you get drawn into it, you realize just how vast and stirring it actually is. Howard's writing is in the truest meaning of that word, larger than life and it is because of it that so many had been able to find succor in it.

Best advice is to just write shit. Doesn't even have to be good. Pair that with reading for inspiration, particularly older stuff. Modern writing, for whatever reason, can't seem to escape modern vocabulary and diction. If you really want to spice up your delivery, read the classics, like Homer and The Nibelungenlied and Beowulf. Pump out crap for a few months, then read over it and write something new. The next few months repeat the process and you will see change. There will be sentences, scenarios, entire plots that will make you think "holy shit, I thought that was cool/a good idea/sounded good?" And make sure to read your dialogue out loud; some stuff sounds good on paper, but absolutely shit in practice.

What got me into manga was Monthly Shonen Jump. If it had just been occasionally buying individual books or borrowing them from the library, I definitely would have never picked up the habit of reading them, especially since my parents were so stingy about buying me... well, anything. On a regular basis, at least. I don't think I even had a subscription, I just knew that there was a new thing to check out every month, and it would be a significant chunk of the story, and all I had to do was track down a copy through school or the library or my friend group.
There needs to be a handful of premier monthly or even weekly comics digests. Put them back in grocery stores and 7-11s and gas stations and, like, Chipotle or whatever, fuck what the local comic shops say. You literally just need one or two big quality names per book and people will see the value. Use cheap paper. Still produce traditional books, but understand that they're collector's items, not read-it-and-trash-it like newspapers or what even comics themselves used to be.

Devs do understand that pulp was the coolest shit ever. But they don't want to do pulp because it's too "male-coded" or "masculine". Just look at what those maniacs did to Kratos, who was the closest we got to a modern pulp hero. They turned him into an emasculated cuckold preaching about how it's okay for women to sleep around and to take care of kids that may or may not be your own. A character oozing bad-ass manliness now forcefully turned into icon for effeminate "men" with thick rimmed glasses, poorly maintained beards, who believe being subservient to women is how you be "manly".

Because it was weird in ways that didn't make sense to modern audiences, that didn't effect the core idea, but which the refused to update. Just say it's an alternate timeline Mars or a completely different planet in a nearby star system or something. There were a bunch of things like that.

I was agreeing with the fact that she had an action girl look, with a personal reason as to why

Who wants to read capeshit anyway? Some of the most "popular" characters are almost a hundred years old, so no wonder people tired of them.

I firmly believe that detox and reintroducing classics can reinvigorate any creative spirit, not to mention internet connectivity. Not everything online is damaging, but it is incredibly time-consuming. So many hours can be lost accomplishing nothing (I'm guilty of this). But it's also incredibly easy to avoid; download what you like and stay offline. Build a small library of media and tell yourself "no internet today" when you really need to be productive. Pearls before swine, but I can't respect myself for bitching about other generations without at least pointing them in the right direction, to the best of my ability. They deserve better than the shit pushed on them.

Going back to comics for a bit, this is why I think that despite all the memes, all the jokes, the .... complete and utter financial crash and bankruptcy, the 90s were still awesome as hell for comics. Because you can say whatever the fuck you want, but they were always TRYING to be cool. Nobody was dancing around trying to offend anyone. No here's a guy with a metal arm. This chick has no spine but her tits are crazy! It's badass!

Nah that's not true. This guy was a god before turning 30, it's all genetic. No point if you don't have the initial talent.

the only fan fiction I have ever thought should be made is when it's an open setting, like say a D&D world, but the characters and events are your own, that's what video game adaptations generally are when you play a game based on a preexisting world

Erotica can be quite good though. At least for short-form work. Gay only. Furry stuff especially. Surprisingly good transhuman/cosmic/existential horror works rooted in particular fetishes.

???
What's wrong with that?

I suppose it is important to remember that this was written in 1912. It's kind of fascinating to go back and see stuff from an alternative perspective. We've roamed Mar's surface these days but back then it was a far off dream. I don't want to condemn exploration or advancement, it's important that we grow and explore and learn, but it does put in perspective different points of view. How we would dream of Mars as these far off star.

>Hi, I own a market share on your publishing company. Make the manly guy look at the camera and say that he needs to pay welfare taxes for single black mothers so he can be a better man or else you're fired and blacklisted.

NYA, but we are talking about Conan here, not some modern male feminist loser.

>Pulp was the cheap derivative entertainment shit much of the time.
Pulp brought more timeless classics than anime

It's hypocritical and clearly agenda focused when they have Wonder Woman sleeping with black men but Conan is somehow a step too far.

You sound inexperienced. Some of the best writing I've ever seen has come from smut writers.

Where's the pulp now?

Pulpfags are more delusional than I thought.

What's action girl look mean. Also, I don't get your reason. You keep going on about having fun. I don't get it.

It's not just about creativity. You see, youth now wants to better empathize with the character or 'wow he's just like me' to the extreme. So what do they do? They remove everything character related; Name, gender, hairstyle, clothes etc.
>>
>a-actually it's anime's fault that 1930s novels aren't sold in the zionist nation of obamistan
Goyim are something else

but it feels really good being an emasculated pussy because you KNOW it gets deep under the skin of people like you but you can't do anything about it, it's the ultimate schadenfraude

Would you expect anything else of Western comics? One of main reason they're dying off is because of the extreme progressiveness.
