I want to add some background elements to this level, so it isn't just solid blue. But I'm worried adding anything would make it harder to see what's happening. I thought about clouds, but they would have to be the same color as the bullets. Any other ideas?

you can make it anything you want as long as it doesn't go heavy on red, green, peach/yellowish, or white.
choose some complimentary colors and fill up the background with things using those colors. this way, the fairy and imps will still stand out and it wont be as boring as solid blue or clouds.

one's 30 levels, they're short and are a shameless ripoff of a game called high hell. this one has no coins, but it has an elevator that'll take you from earlier levels to later levels.
already decided on that set up a while ago

second one is 12 levels, kings field type dungeon crawler game. its 4 zones that are 3 levels long each, you unlock zones by beating the previous one

I'm kind of thinking about doing the hub, since its inspired from Kings Field, so I might turn the hub into a demon's souls reference.
Might also drop the coins, since I have cauldrons that can change spells based on what you put inside of them. In that case, I'll make health potions more common.

yeah, most of them are in-game, meaning when you walk around there's either a mini-game or an arcade cabinet
then a few of them are their own levels/areas, separate from the main game. there's a game console at the player's apartment and interacting with that is how you enter those games.
