As a player, it's also far more advantageous to join a game that's already in progress, since the game is already full and running you can just jump right into the action rather than having to wait for matchmaking to grab you a full game's worth of players from the queue, wait for everyone to load in, and wait for whatever pregame timer the game in question likely has.The other key part of the equation is that in games from before the great enshittening courtesy of ASSFAGGOTS, games were designed in such a way that being down a single player didn't cost you the game. Usually these games had larger team sizes (the difference between an 11 player team and a 12 player team is negligable), and/or more generalized roles (and the ability to change roles mid-game as the situation demands) rather than having every player being required to fill some incredibly specific role that only they can fill with no ability to switch as needed.It's honestly really unfortunate to me that you literally can't even imagine games not being poorly designed, because poor design is all you've ever known.
