My 12 year old brain was blown away by the graphics in FFX, I couldn't believe a console game looked like that.

Then Lenne's memories begin infecting Yuna's dreams. Causing her to see Lenne's death but through the lens of herself and Tidus, which is already fucked up enough for Yuna to probably hate Lenne if she knew what was happening. Then Shuyin begins confusing her for Lenne. And while Yuna herself clearly does not want Shuyin touching her, Lenne has already dug her claws deep enough into Yuna's psyche to be comforted by him.I kind of took Yuna crying after 1000 Words to just be her being emotional. But she really is reliving a tragic death that did not happen to her. I can see why Yuna loses her shit at Mushroom Rock as she screams "I AM NOT LENNE!" at the top of her lungs.

Square wanted so badly to create movie quality games. To the point that they, as a commercial product, was still the gold standard as far as presentation. Every time Squaresoft released a product, it was a public statement. "This is what this console can do." I think the last time they tried was Final Fantasy 13? I know 13 is what it is but it still looks decent to this day. Meanwhile FF16 looked outdated on release.
