One type of indie game I find disappointing is when they put huge effort faithful retro style games that just do the same thing as the original. Why bother then? The point of recreating an old style should be expanding on it, putting on a new spin. One of my most influential games 20 years back was GTA San Andreas to give an example, if I had the skills or funds to recreate the gameplay and style I wouldn't use them just to make a gangster game set in early 90s California, I'd just use that vessel for a new story and go wild with the setting.

It was one of the best FPS games ever made, released completely for free (because the team that was supposed to make the singleplayer mode completely fucked up and the creators were left with only the multiplayer part of the game - so they decided to release it for free instead of scrapping it, like today's studios would do - they'd rather destroy the work than release it for free).Anyone who played Enemy Territory knows what I'm talking about.
