old text adventures or multi user dungeons but 3D. move away from the stat building focused modern rpg and bring back the classic adventure rpg roots. you could even try abstracting the stats to maximize immersion like the old madou monogatari dungeon crawler rpgs did. foundationally stats in rpgs were supposed to be a tool to assist tabletop game masters to tabulate outcomes of events behind the game master's screen. the players were never supposed to concern themselves with such statistics. RPGs evolved from a form of wargaming called "free kriegspiel" where an umpire(game master) maintains unit statistics and tabulates the outcomes of events based on his own whims and expertise while players make most of the decisions largely without being shown any statistics beyond immersive messages and reports set within the scenarios. the "role playing game" was born when the players began assuming the roles of single characters on the field rather than distant commanders absent from the field in charge of whole armies.

Also alternating microgame combat like Warioware. On top of all of that I want to layer off-board interactables and potentially bullet hell-adjacent dodging.Also, pseudo monster raising game as you build a relationship with special characters and develop a FFXII-style gambit system to help modulate their behaviors.Inb4 scope creep, I'm in way too deep at this point so why not just embrace making an incomprehensible mess
