Novelty of being an RPG with a modern-ish setting but still very wacky and cartoony. So it's like playing a fun cartoon. The pacing is also very good from what I recall, doesn't feel like it majorly drags especially in the first half and keeps you engaged and wanting to find out what happensd next. It also has some very wholesome and sentimental overtones that make the whole journey very endearing and positive. Even though your characters don't talk much, you wind up rooting for them in this crazy world. It kind of reminds me of The Goonies, if you've ever seen that. But on a way bigger scale.

I don't get the appeal either. The *GAME* is mostly shit.

1950's Americana is a pretty unique setting for a jrpg. The execution and presentation are also quite good for the 16 bit era which was already the golden age of 2d pixel rpgs. If you can't see the appeal, you probably just don't like that style of game.

It's a pastiche of 90s America through the eyes of a middle aged Japanese bass fisherman with a vested interest in the paranormal, occult, cryptids, aliens, cultists, ESP, and so on.

It's kind of anachronistic because it's what a Japanese guy thought America in the early 90's was like, but the visuals and vibes are heavily based in the 50's-60's. Particularly since it's so tied to saucer cults and the UFO craze.

I always felt like the first 2 pokemon gens felt very similar to earthbound in a lot of ways. There's also Undertale but that was a conscious effort to make something in the vein of earthbound. I haven't played Chulip, but I've seen some videos and it gave me a lot of the same vibes as Earthbound, in terms of art style, weird but cozy vibe, and oddball humor.

Despite there being a lot of indie devs that were inspired by Earthbound, they sure never did anything even remotely as good.

Imagine that, a game from 1994 with a file size of 50 MB with archaic features (inventory system) with all the limitations of hardware and software at the time reigns supreme over the heaps of putrid slop that is churned out by indies non-stop.
