>modern game has a "minimalistic" UI with a stock white font and black/white translucent rectangles
Instant into the trash.

Man, what the fuck happened to game UIs? They used to be actually unique, cool and fun. Having as much iconic gusto to them as the game itself, adding to the atmosphere and the overall experience. You can instantly identify so many games just by their UI elements. Nowadays all UIs are literally interchangeable. It seems they're trying to make games as bland and forgettable as possible even down to the most basic elements.
>>
Minimalist HUDs are for immersing the player in to the game. However, it's just a LAZY way of doing it, since there are devs who find immersive ways of conveying information to you without using some shitty minimalist UI.

A minimal UI in a fighting game seems dumb at a conceptual level, though. A fightan gaem player needs to see his bars. You're not immersing yourself into a 2D fightan.

>Minimalist HUDs are for immersing the player in to the game
They already solved this issue back in the PS2 days with UI that goes away if you're not doing shit, or you call it up/hide it with a press of a button. No need for soulless interchangeable minimalist slop.

You're talking about the size of the UI. OP is talking about the style. Skyrim's UI is horrendously immersion-breaking compared to Oblivion.

I miss when RPGs had menu customization and different themes. When was the last game that did this?
>>
>>729873556

The fact that even japs started copying gaijin and doing this shit is disturbing.

Game companies started hiring web UX devs (women who can't code) for UI, that's pretty much it.
>>
>>729886081
coding is not the issue here
>>
half of it is because they're too lazy to design soulful uis that can scale to whatever retarded screen dimensions people are using these days. the other half is because instead of having the regular game artists design menus they have "ui design" artists who blindly follow "best practices" meant for phone screens.

Assassin’s Creed was actually a pioneer of highly immersive HUDs. The HUD in the early games is contextualised as being part of the simulation and the first game’s HUD especially has a dystopian sci-fi theme so you don’t forget that you’re in a simulation.
>>
>>729873556
Another gripe I have with modern games
>sound design is some sort of generic bendy wobbly metal
>volume is terribly inconsistent, too quiet or too loud

Art is dead.
>>
>>729890653
video games were never art.
>>
>>729890705
They have always been.
They are literally a combination of multiple visual arts, and many people have used the media to express their emotions and ideas. Which is a trademark sign of art.
>>
>>729890830
>They are literally a combination of multiple visual arts
so are Avengers movies, are they also art?
