The Empire has collapsed and been reformed several times. In terms of narrative sense, surely it would be fitting for a new Human Kingdom of Skyrim (where much it all began) to become the staging point for a future reclamation of it?

Stormcloaks are not only the better choice for Skyrim than the Imperials, but a better choice for the long-term future of man than the Imperials. It is for this reason that my next Skyrim character will be a Nord Traditionalist Dragonborn with a Khajiit wife, of course.

Stormcloaks versus Imperials is the simplest litmus test, and so many mouth-breathers got it wrong. Putting aside the most obvious tell right at the beginning of the game:

You are actually worse, because you are actively subjugating and persecuting the very peoples you should be protecting by letting the Thalmor do as they please. For anyone.
