>no mass media campaign talking about it as a spectacle and a product on every corner of everyday life
>no internet hysteria, content sloppers, streamers, essayists, spoiling thumbnails, shills, meaningless discussions, sales and reviews shitflinging, dev exposés or controversies, social media tribes, day 1 wikis and walkthroughs and Discords

You may not like it but this was the peak way of experiencing vidya

And now it's gone forever unless you're an Amish kid or something

I feel like youchoob essayers and lets players/reactions are what really killed games. Like with essayers now you have to go into a deep dive about how deep and thought provoking a game is when it was just 10 retards in an office just trying to make some money by making a fun game.

>buy a game in the store because it has a cool cover without knowing anything about it
I never did this. Games were expensive enough already to waste money by buying blind, and game magazines were a thing
>play it deep into the night
I'd rather wake up early, have a nice breakfast and play before school
>spend all day at school thinking about what cool things are going to happen next and what it has in store
I spent my time at school studying nigga
>come home and straight back to playing the game

yeah that was cool

you can control your exposure to that crap you know. don't expose yourself to social media nor YouTube retards, and don't visit this site until you've beaten the game

That's literally not how it works though

It's like comparing actual explorers finding forgotten lands, to going on a tourist trip and pretending all the other tourists aren't there
>>
>>729878008
Wrong. You played something that we hated. Imagine all the OHNONONO AHAHAHAs we would have posted. Doesn’t it make you feel bad knowing that you did something that we hate? Why do you want to be a pariah? Just come clean and disavow your non-compliant consumption habits. I bet you even played it on c*nsole. Uh oh! We hate that!
>>
>>729878461
You could just play games that are so obscure/new that they simply do not have guides or youtubers talking about it. I had a pretty "magical" time playing the End of Dyeus (NG+ since regular NG does have a guide, not that I read it) for example.
>>
there used to be shows on TV dedicated solely to discussing games actually, and magazines
>>
>>729878742
Then you know they're obscure and have small budgets and aren't going to receive sequels and can see their overall review while buying them etc

The only way to emulate this feeling these days for me is playing old games I never heard of before
>>
I mean technically you could still do this if you just quit twitter, 4chan, stop reading steam forums full of ragebait etc
>>
every single reply before me is a newfag tourist and i wish to God my hand could reach through the screen and smash your faces in with a rock

Honestly it's fun to go through rom sites and check out any games based on the cover art provided and discover what the fuck weird shit you stumbled across. I've found some interesting games doing that. I think it's best to keep knowledge of a game limited before you play it for the first time.

It's gone because you keep engaging with sites like this. I only come here when I have no new games to play and I want to argue with mentally handicapped people. The moment I have a new game, I cut myself off from all social media. I live in that fictional world for a short time, and I have a blast almost every single time. There is no one to compare to, no one to tell me how I should play the game or what I am supposed to enjoy. No guides, no takes, no opinions. I don't talk about the game until I am done with it. The internet is a grand idea, but social media is a cancer that should be put to death. Comparison is the thief of joy and it's comparison and the opinion of the herd that sucks all the joy out of games. Normies are P-zombies, and online communities are vampires. Stay away from them.

If you don't know or acknowledge any info on the game from social media and YouTube then yeah it kind of is like being an explorer. Not sure how discussion around a game that you're not even listening to could possibly affect your playthrough. If it's the fact that there's too many normies playing games now and you want obscurity just play some hidden gem retro shit or indie games with <50 reviews. Stop being a faggot.

I feel this, but you can just unplug from social media and preserve most of this experience. I feel bad for younger generations that get exposed to social media before developing a really strong connection with a piece of fictional media. Letting the dynamics of a 'fandom' or some other element of a work's online presence influence your personal experience with the work sucks and its difficult for a lot of people to filter out that noise and just focus on their own experience with the work, especially if they've been exposed to online discourse from an early age. There's ten year olds out there listening to hours of contrarian takes of games they've never and will never play. Its easy to write all that off as white noise, but it fucks with people's attention span and ability to look at things critically without their perspective being colored by other peoples opinions. I wonder if their capacity to enjoy media on a personal level will be stunted because of that.

There's really no way to replicate the feeling of browsing for games in a store anymore, storefronts immediately tell you if a game is popular and its review score, and even if you pirate the games will be sorted by seeders, if you're emulating then there's way too many ROMs to sort through so you'll have to end up asking people for recommendations which brings you back to the social aspect and bias

Then there's the fact most of us already know roughly how much content to expect from a game and what kind, and whether or not it got sequels, a big part of the appeal of childlike ignorance is imagining how the story and the world will continue, and right now that's pointless with both old games and new

1cc-ing shmups is not really the same as exploring an uncharted game world, it's insanely repetitive. Playing unknown games going in blind is a much closer experience

This is where you're wrong and how I know you're a zoomer who didn't grow up with a NES or SNES. Games are not interactive experiences, they're meant to be won.

You've haven't played a single real video game yet, how exciting for you.
