I liked renting it and eventually bought it on the wii virtual console. I've only played Yoshi's Story and its sequels, never played Island.
It's a neat little game. Probably the second best yoshi game (although Yoshi Island beats it by miles).I think the negative views comes from the era it was released. Back then you had a much better selection of games and to pay full price (or waste a rental) on this probably left people with a bad taste. I inherited this game from my siblings so I didn't care and just had fun. I also love older prerendered artstyles but some people dislike it and prefer shitty yarn or something. For me a lot of modern 2.5d games have too much depth and background noise, and really ugly lighting. This game doesn't (although the aliasing is pretty bad and noticeable on modern tvs).

It has the best creature design and aesthetics in the Mario series. I genuinely want to draw monsters like this.

Probably one of the best 2D platformers games targetted towards kids or casual play.Before the N64 I had a Sega Megadrive/Genesis and shit like Revenge of Shinobi, Streets of Rage even Sonic being unforgiving meant I rarely got to.the end of them. Playstation had Rayman that fucking hates the player after the furst few levels.So to have a game that played well, had nice looking graphics, had lots of secrets/exploration and you would likely get to the ending in one session kept me coming back to it.
Making the Yoshis infants was a bad move, it should have just been a sequel (chronologically) to Yoshi's Island with a bigger threat, not Bowser but a new threat. Keep the Mario elements but make new stuff specifically tied to Yoshi down to the villain itself.
