That game predates the genre but is one of the inspiring building blocks for Japanese devs to create and standardize what is coined as JRPG. Sort of like how wargaming was a foundational aspect for pen and paper RPGs.

Outside of Persona, the Swordcraft series is probably the only JRPG I know of where the spinoff is more popular than the main series. I recently went back to them and they’re still as fun as I remember. I’ve tried other SN games that got localized, but they just aren’t fun, they’re generic strategy RPGs. There’s something about the Swordcraft games that makes them more engaging, and it’s not just because of the action gameplay.

Sometimes I feel like I’m the only person in the world who cares about this series.

Japanese Action Role-Playing games are older or as old as Turn-Based Roleplaying Japanese ones, same goes with Strategy RPGs too.

Dragon Warrior is older than Final Fantasy for fuck's sake, the series that the Trails of series -- FUCKING MEAN REAN'S GAMES -- are a part of and Ys spun out of is OLDER THAN FINAL FANTASY.

It Historically and Categorically makes no sense to treat JRPG as a genre.

How it plays is arbitrary.
There's only a few consistent mechanics.
Some kind of stat system is required.
Being made by Japanese people is required.

You could get into arguments about "style" or whatever but none of that really matters.
What matters is the people who make the thing and the one consistent element of all of these games being that.
It's like how people that are really dumb say that anime is a "style" when it is specifically used to refer to Japanese animation and anyone who actually likes anime despises the korean/chinese/other-asian-here stuff that is coming out capitalizing on the explosion of anime.

It's the Japanese approach to making things that I am personally attracted to and I don't care about how other people choose to define what is or isn't a JRPG.
Calling it a "style" is something that only a person that doesn't love JRPGs would do.
Much like hardcore porn, I know a JRPG when I see it.
"how does it play" fuck off you reductive mindless cunt.

It would largely depend on whether or not they were impacted by the culture of Seattle and to what degree but I'd argue if the people are Japanese and have a lot of the same sensibilities of Japanese people (who are from and live in Japan) and they're not allowing the culture to change them significantly then they'd be JRPGs.
If they're specifically trying to appeal to westerners and using a lot of westerners in the creation of narrative and game design, that's where the biggest issues I have come from.

The programmers can be from anywhere as long as the actual design is done by Japanese people.
Ideally the "localizers" will be true to the original script but oftentimes they're not. It's bad when they're inaccurate but I can live with it if the changes aren't too zany or focused entirely on weird humor or references or the like.
I know a lot is lost in translation so I'm pretty lenient as far as script goes, as long as the gameplay is in-tact and a solid percentage of the story is close enough I'm okay.
But in the coming years from the explosion of multiculturalism and the potential destruction of Japan as a nation I feel like my favorite kinds of games are at risk.
Hopefully I'll be long dead before I see the eradication of what I personally enjoy but I will probably outlive it.

>>729891187
Genre is stupid anyways. I have defined what it is to me and that's all that matters.

no, but wizardry has had an extremely heavy influence in nip game development and fantasy
they took it like flies to shit
>>
>>729891606
I've never played it but yeah probably.
It does specifically appeal to westerners though and it doesn't seem have very many of the mechanics I personally like but sure.
I don't see any issue with calling this a JRPG outside of the simple fact that other descriptors would work better. It's a J-wrestling game for sure though.

what's a JRPG?
>>
>>729891741
Therefore according to the food analogies itt every Jap RPG that imitates Wizardry is American. DQ and FF are American, every game inspired by them is American therefore we should be calling them ARPGs.

>>729891792
>J-wrestling game
Thus defeating your point
>>
>JRPG has to come from Japan
It was largely popularized and standardized by Japan during the video game boom of last decades. That's the entire point. It was EMBLEMATIC of RPGs that were coming out of Japan at the time which coined the term. Japan doesn't even use the term JRPG until the last decade and a half or so, but they distinguished WRPGs mostly from the US (洋).
>>
>>729888585
I have Magna Carta on PSP
>>
>>729883287
>>
>>729891895
Japan specifically calls them Western RPGs to differentiate them making their own style from RPGs. For most of the video game industry it was just US and Japan conducting cultural exchange for decades. Japan learned what RPGs were from the US.
>>
>>729891895
Yuke's was known for Wrestling games.
I never said it's not a JRPG just that "wrestling" as a term fits better. My point is solid.
Also the other WWE games are RPGs too. I never said anything that contradicts itself.

They technically wouldn't be American just like every miniature wargame hobby in existence wouldn't be British.
>>
>>729885251
I played the first one on a whim based on that "uh I kiss other girls all the time!" image. I went in expecting a top down action game but it was a 2D action game like old Tales games (I only played Abyss). Very good game and I of course was a Drill weapon chad. FeMC and Sugar are pretty cute too but apparently Sugar is a hand-me-down from your dad or some shit which was kind of weird.

lost odyssey stuck on the xbox 360 forever
>>
>>729892115
That's my point. And they made something distinct and with good enough frequency to earn a toponymic title as a genre.
>>
>>729891904
>>729892017
Japan does not use the term "Western RPG" They use the term "Foreign Game," they still categorise games appropriately, like for instance Wasteland 2 is described as a SRPG, the same genre of game as Fire Emblem. Nobody uses WRPG as a term except the same people who think JRPG is a genre.

>>729892027
>just that "wrestling" as a term fits better
Which again defeats your point.
