PS1 by far. We’re talking a system with 50+ good games vs like 10 good games on N64. People today still play and talk about Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy etc etc. Ain’t nobody playing Goldeneye in 2026 lmao.

ps1 if you want as much content as possible (cd-rom)
n64 if you want the best 3d graphics (sgi)

The PS1 is the winner and this is coming from someone who believes Nintendo didn't release a single bad game on that console themselves. They just couldn't hard-carry that console into first place.

Playstation. For every great game on N64, Playstation had at least 10 of the same genre. I can't think of a single game worth playing on Saturn.

Ps1 and it's not even remotely close. All those legendary games and they had a functional controller.

Was the Saturn only big in America or what? I'm in Europe and back then I never even heard of the Saturn and literally nobody had one. Literally everyone had a PS1 and then some people, myself included, also had an N64. But I never knew anyone at all with a Saturn. I also never knew anyone who only had an N64. If someone had an N64 they also had the PS1. As far as I knew back then SEGA went from the Megadrive to the Dreamcast. I didn't find out about the Saturn until I was way older.

No the Saturn flopped everywhere except Japan, in which it was SEGA's best selling console there. There were some pretty terrible marketing decisions by SEGA of America.
Japan had some funny advertisements though.

You played Leifthrasir didn't you?
>>
>>729884018
Ps1 was the jrpg and fighting king
N64 was the racing and adventure action king
Saturn was ignored by everyone I knew
>>
>>729886404
Saturn was only big in Japan, according to Google it sold 5 mil there, 1.8 mil in the US and 1 mil in Europe.
For comparison, Playstation sold 40 mil in both the US and Europe, 20 mil in Asia.
>>
>>729886805
>You played Leifthrasir didn't you?
I had both the PS2 and Vita versions. While superficially similar it a) doesn't lock you into a one-on-one fighting game window for every encounter, b) allows you to freely move and fly around the environment during combat and c) every attack and action doesn't have the sluggishness and commitment of an articulated overloaded truck. So no, it's not the same combat system, it's one that's markedly similar and different largely by virtue of not being complete garbage.
>>
>>729886020
N64 only had five 3D games running at 60fps. More if you count 2D games. PS1 and Saturn both had way more 60fps titles.

PS Single is best 20th century home console, a good deal better than the Sneszz (arguably the 2nd place).

I would also place the Saturn above the N64 if I could speak / read Japanese, Saturn's JPN library is very solid.

>>729884265
This webm is hilarious, you can just tell a SEGA fan made this. Saturn also suffered from texture perspective issues (warping, clipping, etc), just less so than the PS Single. Burning Rangers runs like the game world is about to break apart at any given moment.

I mean of course Odin Sphere was created with lessons learnt from princess crown, and a more complex system to run it on.
>doesn't lock you into a one-on-one fighting game window for every encounter
Fair enough, it doesn't personally bother me, I don't think it makes the game worse.
>allows you to freely move and fly around the environment during combat
There's nothing wrong with having a more grounded approach to movement, if anything I appreciate that Gradriel isn't special in any particular way outside of her royal status.
>every attack and action doesn't have the sluggishness and commitment of an articulated overloaded truck
Attacks have commitment, it's similar to how the original Castlevanias played with the whip delay and jumps you can't change direction mid air, the POW system especially with using the charged attack is a good example given it makes you completely vulnerable after usage.
There are tons of items and spells to use as well to assist as you progress through the game as well.
I'm not arguing it's the same combat system, I like how Odin Sphere evolved the combat into something fresh, but it doesn't make Princess Crown bad because the sequel did something different, or that they don't share similarities. It's pretty clear Odin Sphere is gameplay wise a sequel to Princess Crown, just with different priorities. Classicvania is still great even after Igavanias replaced it.
>>
>>729888621
How? PS1 was obviously the better buy in that situation. N64 just has more game that people still bother to talk about in the modern day, that doesn't translate to the N64 having been a better value at the time.
>>
>>729888791
The N64 has what 3 games that are still talked about? PS1 has far more.

My point was that Kamitani evidently didn't consider the crude combat system of PC worth holding onto or revisiting, even if you consider OS as being a more polished version of it (in itself a fairly tenuous claim considering the sheer extent of the differences), going further into Muramasa and Dragon's Crown, they all but strip what little remained of PC's mechanics in favor of a more responsive and less restrictive approach to combat. Maybe saying that Princess Crown plays like ass isn't strictly fair and I'll concede it does have some charm that adds verisimilitude to the premise that Gradriel is a princess and not really a warrior, but at the end of the day I'd never consider it a game with combat that's fun to play and Vanillaware ultimately dropping it for a streamlined approach suggests the devs felt the same way.

I mean I am in agreement with you that it is a technically less polished, less complex game and has a lot of flaws due to troubled development and issues like that. It's hard to know how much of the game's design was due to these factors. It could be possible that the heavier focus on streamlined combat from Vanillaware was due to Princess Crown's commercial failure.
>but at the end of the day I'd never consider it a game with combat that's fun to play
I mean fair enough, I definitely felt similar when first playing but after getting used to the combat I started to appreciate it for what it is and represents for Gradriel's character. It is fun in my opinion, but I'd be lying if I said Odin Sphere didn't improve the combat substantially.

As a kid, the N64 was better. Especially if you had multiple brothers/friends to play with. As an adult, the PS1 library is so insane that it is magnitudes better. The Saturn is mostly irrelevant.
>>
>>729884018
Something really cool about that generation is that all 3 have very different strengths and a lot of good games.
Best one was the PSX because it had Azure Dreams, Soul Edge and Breath of Fire 4.
>>
>>729884018
I was a 64 kid, but I really like the PS1's depth and variety, so I'd have to go with that. As an adult I do appreciate the N64's fast loading times more. The Saturn is a joke; maybe I'd like it more if I was a lonely otaku obsessed with shmups.

Ps1>saturn>n64
Ps1 best overall. A lot of variety and above all, more exclusives
Saturn had the same variety, niche games, god tier rpgs, fighters, racers, everything, but lacked the number of exclusives ps1 had
N64 was the mario and Zelda machine.
No rpgs, barely any note worthy games. It had good platformers like banjo and Mario 64, but even in that department, the ps1 crashed it.
>>
>>729887575
Virtua Fighter 2 ran at 60fps and it was the game with the highest res in that gen.
Saturn was a tech nightmare to develop, but it was more capable than you think.
