My path got me some early game caster gear and I ended up going an INT build including getting Comet Azur before everyone knew how OP it was and also the tear that removes mana cost during its effect.My second playthrough for the DLC I went Vagabond I think and was a Str based dual wielder.

Always Wretch or whatever equivalent the game has. I fucking love starting with nothing since it makes every piece or armor and every weapon viable at the start. Pick up some tattered rags? Fuck yeah, new armor. Find a wooden plank for a shield? Sick, something to protect me. Souls games always hit a point where you've essentially got your entire build and equipment locked in, which often means you'll spend a good 40% of the game seeing your character unchanged. That, and if you start with a class that has proper armor or a weapon, all of those beginner bits of equipment you find are trash. But if you play as a Wretch, everything is useful, everything is an exciting find. At least for a few hours at the start of the game.It's also great for when you're totally new to the game and aren't sure what kind of build you want to end up with. You can go anywhere with it and adapt as you play. You don't have to make up for huge stat deficits if you suddenly find a weapon or spell you want to use. Always Wretch when its an option. It makes the first quarter of the game a blast.

These games only got better but come with a lot of issues. They still haven't reached engaging levels of fun like Monster Hunter or Dragon's Dogma but their boss fights have come a long way from the jank disappointments from the earlier games.
