How was making games harder supposed to stop rentals? Wouldn't that just earn rental stores more money, since players would have to keep renting the game?

If you clear a game, you're done with it. If you get up to world 2 out of 9, then it sits as a worm of sorts in the back of your mind, reminding you to play it.

It was not meant to "stop" anything, but do exactly what you said: make rental times longer and more numerous in theory. But that shit only worked in the Stated.

Cartridges were expensive, and you could often experience a game had to offer over a weekend. Maybe also trying out a game before buying it outright.
