I find it strange that this absolute clunker of a game, and there is literally not a single thing in it that works right, still somehow manages to be a comfy unforgettable experience I keep coming back to. I think the game captures the sense of isolation really well. You do feel truly alone, stranded on an island with dinos. The game’s sound design is really good actually, and the melancholic narration by Richard Attenborough genuinely makes it feel like part of Jurassic Park lore. It still has that magical atmosphere of the first 2 movies. If nothing else, you should go listen to it just on its own - youtube.com/watch?v=E6fgLbSw7Ao

The janky physics-based gameplay actually plays into that sense of isolation really well, even if unintentionally. Because it’s so hard to execute virtually any action, and they don’t work as intended half the time, there is zero sense of empowerment you usually get in a video game. Sure, you have a weapon, but you can’t actually rely on it. Hell, even picking a weapon up can be an issue, let alone using it consistently. It is extraordinarily realistic in that regard and you’re always on your edge, a single raptor can spell your doom.
The ambition was great, and though it didn’t work out in the end, you can’t help but admire it.
Also, looking down at booba to see your health is a very kino UI.

Fun fact: this game was among the first, if not the first game to use bump mapping on textures.

I miss games with dinosaurs. We used to have the Jurassic Park games, then there were Turok games, Dino Crisis series. Monster Hunter to an extension. There was always some game with dinos to buy.

Dinosaurs don't make for particularly interesting antagonists. They're just animals. It's like having an FPS where all the enemies are big cats. So you'd have lions, tigers, cheetahs, etc., and each does the same thing – a basic melee attack – and is only differentiated by its appearance and the sound it makes. There's no grand master plan, no high stakes threat against the world, because they're just fuckin' cats. And so it is with dinos.

what a dumb zoomer post, we had dino games for literal decades, they were awesome and nobody was complaining

Yeah Dino Crisis and Turok were hugely popular games in their own right and weren't just capitalising on the passing dino fad Jurrassic Park had created. That's why those series continued into the following decades with regular sequels that were always in high demand.

I will always say this: that game needs VR remaster/remake

Fuck the key cards though. Should have made something better.
