I think that american game devs are so stupid that they think that they are being accurate and respectful. I think the average american game dev thinks that medieval scandinavia looked more or less like skyrim but without the dragons. The GoW devs I believe really think that the average viking was going around in loin cloths, had dreads, and was tatted up.

I wonder if they're ever going to realize that not letting people have fun makes everyone hate them more and that stuff that's a random shallow mishmash can inspire people to pursue deeper understanding. Lots of huge breakthroughs in paleontology are being made today by kids who grew up watching jurassic park.

They don't do that with any setting tho. Look at RDR. The whole game is WAY more progressive than even the 1980s US was. But they all do it. To be truly authentic devs would have to lean into themes and topics that just wouldn't fly today.
