What's crazy is how long it took for pausing cutscenes without skipping them to be a standard thing. I remember a major meltdown happening one time because my parents called me in for dinner in the middle of the chain of cutscenes where Snake gets captured in MGS3 and I hadn't saved in a while so I didn't want to quit.

I have no idea why Blockbuster is so venerated by older millennials, I only remember that they kind of had shit policies. Growing up we never rented stuff from Blockbuster. In order...
>large independent video store owned by Kroger (one of a kind) until around 1996
>Hastings (big chain in smaller-market Texas) until around the early 2000s
>Albertsons (very briefly, their rental selection was shit and scratched up but DIRT CHEAP) in the early 2000s
>back to Hastings again (until the late 2000s)
>Netflix DVD mail-in (until some point in the mid-to-late 2010s)
>then streaming but by that time I moved out

Anon with thoughts like this, I'm sure you're rather considerate towards your fellow man. Unfortunately it seems that only some millennials and onward have the zoggified mentality of "exist but don't" The amount of boomers that seem to feel as though it is their right to impede on others' existence for the pleasure/quality of their own is insane. My whole life growing up I was told to be anything but a bother to another person, and I feel that was pretty common for how younger generations were raised by those very same selfish people.

This is a facetious question asked by a privileged white American man that has never known the deprivations of war. The question is based on the false premise that war is meant to "solve problems". War is meant to stop your country from being destroyed, your women raped, and your children's skulls bashed against the rocks. Sometimes, violence is the only way to prevent that. What would a cartoonist know about war, let alone how to solve the world's problems?

I remember playing Sonic Adventure 2 and not being able to do the Knuckles section on the last mission because I didn't know the air breather was a thing. So one day I was at the grocery store with my dad and was looking at the magazines while he was doing whatever. I found the SA2 guidebook and legit just sat on the floor and crammed as much knowledge in the time it took for my dad to finish shopping. Ended up reading enough to find the air breather which let me finally beat the game.

Obviously the apple doesn't fall far from the tree and I'm constantly inflicting pain on myself for no good reason. I've ruined plenty a good relationship just because she and (other women, there was a woman in her 30s that essentially housed and drugged me for a week to "teach me" shit) had turned me into this fucking weirdo who thought it was normal to choke women til they were blue, she would beg me to punch her in the face and shit. I hate who I am when I have sex because I can't actually consider the person anymore and if I actually care about someone I can't be intimate with them because of it. I want to love myself more than anyone else really, but I can't put in the work to actually make myself someone I consider worth it. Much to the dismay of the people in my life currently who love me seemingly unconditionally

That you can utterly turn your whole life around and achieve a completely idyllic existence and never touch drugs again but in the back of your head you'll know that even with a loving wife and kids and a million dollars nothing you experience will ever be as good as the first time you did heroin, that it was so good that it permanently damaged your brain just by recalibrating your sense of pleasure

nta but humanity hasn't seen "real" war in hundreds of years
most wars in recent history have been political mercenary forces engaging in skirmishes to protect the ownership of resources by elites
imagine one group of rich people sending conscripted soldiers to go protect their oil reserves from another group of rich people who are sending their conscripted soldiers to steal them
these are the sorts of "wars" people hate, elite psychopaths doing anything they can to protect their power
at previous points of human history, in more primitive eras, tribal warfare, enslavement, rape, torture, genocide, were all common results of unarmed groups of people being on the receiving end of violence
if you failed to fight back against an invading mongol horde, you would be killed, your children would be enslaved, and your women would be raped
these are real wars, where violence is the only option you have to prevent everything you love from being brutally destroyed
modern wars do not even closely resemble this
if a war breaks out between iran and america, nobody would genuinely care, because neither entity proposes such a gruesome violent threat
that would be a fake war
but imagine, a wild horde of violent wolves that eats humans indiscriminately grows in number and poses a genuine threat to the members of your community? fighting back would be your only option
that would be a real war
we only hate war because modern war is bullshit
humans love real war

Now all that left that worth playing are wmmt and time crisis 5, the rest are just claw machines, phone game port and Chinese crap, hell the Chinese crap even has tf2 engineer for some reason. Australia is such a sad and sterile culture. You guys are this really weird combination of American,Canadian, and British but lack the charm of any of them. Australian culture seems like it was created in a corporate board room meeting where a bunch of disconnected rich guys got together and tried to put together a natural product but instead it resulted in just slop. I think your Christmas is the perfect example of this. Although it is summer you guys still buy fake Christmas trees, put up lights, and have Nordic inspired interior decorations but then have silly summer traditions like going to the beach. Instead of ripping off norther American/european traditions and holidays you guys should have come up with your own (like North america with thanksgiving). Australians truly live a sad existence

My cousin introduced me to GTA when I was 9, we played Vice City and San Andreas together and I recall having loads of fun trying out all the cheatcodes he had written out on a piece of paper and generally just running around killing a bunch of innocent people. He also tried to get me into Homestuck but I didn't get the appeal. He killed himself a year later.

my city had a video rental store called family video. it opened right around the time monsters inc and the live action scooby doo movie came out, so they had giant decals of sully and mike, and shaggy and scooby on the wall. they never took these down even ten years later. the video rental store went out of business and the building became a dentist office. that dentist office still has the graphics of monsters inc and scooby doo on the wall.

I'd go to Kroger and take the magazine to the front where they had a copier you could use for 10 cents per copy. I'd copy game guides then put the magazine back. On hindsight, I'm surprised no one ever yelled at me for that.

I dunno. I worked there for a while, and the free rentals thing was a big deal. We couldn't rent games or new releases for free, but anything else was fine. And, dude, when you're a teen in the 90s with a TV in your room and a girlfriend, you WANT those free movie rentals.

I don't think it's nostalgia for Blockbuster specifically, but more for video rentals in general, BB is just used as a synonym for them all due to being most recognisable

I lived in middle TN back then, and it was the only place I ever saw games NOT locked up in the 90s. Walmart had them out in the open. GameStop didn't remove the disc from the display case. Aside from that town, I've never in my life seen games not locked up. Even in the early 90s, they were locked up. Why, yes, it was a 98% caucasian european county. How did you guess?

There are a lot of different theories about nostalgia, but I'm curious. Nostalgia is typically though of as something you remember fondly from being a kid, but I was 17 in 2010 and I have a sense of nostalgia for a couple things from around that time. One example is early minecraft, before biomes existed and all the grass was that neon green color. I watched adventure time when it came out, and I have no nostalgia for it even though I liked it. I even have to consciously remind myself that adventure time and minecraft basically came out right around the same time. bob's burgers too.

Is nostalgia really connected to age like we assume, or is it really just that shit is so faggy and gay now that nobody cherishes it? or is it that there's literally just so much stuff that you never even get to take the time to make it part of yourself? As a kid, I had a playstation, and the only games I had for it were the crash and spyro games, so I consider those a core part of my taste in entertainment, but nothing from when I was old enough to work and buy whatever I wanted.

The original Game Genie connected to the parellel port on the back of the PS1. This was the 1st edition PS1. They removed the port later on. But, it had a button on the side you could tap to freeze the memory and edit it. We had fun.

my parents bought me that castle from a garage sale. just the castle. none of the knights or the cannon or the boulder for the cannon. I mean cool I guess. I don't know the details on how they came across it so I can only speculate, but how does a person ONLY have the castle but none of the accessories? how do you lose every single piece that came with it? were they possibly selling all of the accessories separately and my parents were just to ignorant to notice? what did they think I was going to do with a castle that had no play pieces?

Though my parents also bought me a playstation and only one game and they couldn't understand why I'd want other games for it as well so I literally only ever had one game for it.

Nostalgia isn't strictly connected to a certain age, but more to the passage of time. Our brain tends to develop nostalgic feelings for things, places, activities etc. from our past regardless of what specific age their connected to. There are a bunch of different theories for why it does that. It's true that we tend to have more nostalgic feelings for things from our childhood, bur it's not solely for them. For example I have some things I'm a bit nostalgic for even from 6-7 years ago, probably largely because my life used to look completely different back then.
Also, fun fact, research shows that as a general rule of thumb society and culture tends to feel the strongest nostalgia for things from around 20 years in the past. As this thread nicely shows.

You can't evolve pikachu into raichu in yellow version. Two fun facts though.

1. Any pikachu with your character's OT and ID will follow you the same as the starter pikachu. It isn't normally possible to catch more of them, but you can through glitches. The "happiness" value is also shared between all player owned pikachu because happiness was otherwise not a thing in gen 1.

2. It actually is possible to evolve your starter pikachu in yellow version through a glitch with the following steps. Get your pikachu close to leveling up, then enter a wild battle. Send pikachu out first, and then swap to a growlithe. Have the growlithe finish the wild pokemon. The pikachu should level up. After the battle is concluded, the pikachu will then evolve in to raichu. Why does this happen? Fuck you.

just play a game you know nothing about. don't read anything about it online. don't give up playing it to do something else. as a kid, I didn't have endless things to keep myself occupied and I didn't have the internet to look up a game walkthrough. if I got a game I had never heard of, I'd just have to play it over and over and over to figure things out. I couldn't just go on steam and play something else if it was frustrating me. This is how I eventually learned that I was never going to beat rayman on the PS1.

I know she didn't do it on purpose, but how does the box that says NEW SAVE not clue you in that maybe that's what you should be clicking on when you're saving your game? What's funnier is how mad it would make me, considering I can beat any of those games 100% in like 3 hours today.

why does it seem like parents would always side with the instigator whenever you retaliated against them. one time my cousin threw a ball of ice at me and gave me a nose bleed, so I threw a snowball that hit him in the dick causing him to collapse and everyone got mad at me.
