He's a great unit and worth recruiting and taking even to end game (solos the boss even on cursed lol) He's easy just be nice and honest to him, he's a kid. You can run away from every encounter there too, but the tiny teeth die in one hit.You don't need to do the frozen apartment or the facetaker either, they're not mandatory encounters and theyre both very gimmicky. they take 2x damage from fire. so molotovs are important, and anything from the painter takes 3x damage to acid. So the turpentines he gives you basically nukes him. This is what I meant by playing to the weaknesses. They become easy fights once you can properly deal with them. Explosives are good damage, but I would probably reccomend buying stuff like the acid flasks instead, or better yet their materiel.If I were you I'd stock up on a bunch of kylsox and vinegear too (later on they turn into healing sprays, aoe heal with mushrooms). Came around to you guys on Audrey. Reckless driving helps but I think Audrey is one of the best candidates for the Crimson Ring and Champions belt too - the Training Belt hurts her Stamina too much imo. I think I used her ballistics sets from the landlords apartment more than Reckless Driving too - both her and Roaches would just turn one obliterate the shade bosses. Just spamming Fire, acid, freeze or the full party heal was what I mostly did throughout the run with occasional swaps to reckless driving if enemy count was high.Dan is another I'd consider one of the best characters alongside Ernest - passive 200 dollars a day from Blind Fury spam if you get the one blindness immunity item + coffee machine is just too good. Can use this to spam fire arms like Ernest as well. And Roaches is a casual monster with the whips/multi hitting items, some mild health buffs so he can safely spam roaches on everyone, good with guns too cause of cowboy hat + trench coat. I regret solving the schism but he was still broken aftetwards.

The moment the bus hits the lobby on the ground floor is the exact moment the game quits pretending to be horror. From then on it's still got some horror left in it but it's a side thing or just the general design of certain cursed/shades and a lot of the bosses/location just become crazier/cooler. And Floor 1 with the Rat Crown has very different vibes than Floor 1 without it. And once you experience Rat Hell with the Crown - you just won't look at the rats the same way. Even Floor 2 - once you know the strat - it's just free early squadmate/free gun.

I wish you could get the Door Squadmates by just finding them near their apartments or in various areas - Dan wouldn't even be bad since you'd have to open up the elevator so long as you got his blindness immunity item so he can begin spamming Blind Fury at level 6. Hellen would be broken as shit though as a day 1 plant apartment recruit. Forget Papineau - day 1 guaranteed Hellen would be insane. You'd have to make it so plant apartment requires a key to enter and on cursed she would def need some sort of down payment to keep it so you can't just beeline for her every game. I feel Morton would be in the basement somewhere trying to collect Junk. Aster being an earlier recruit in the game would help him since he is just plain worse than Ernest and you only really use him for status removal, Fire Safety to cheese Furnace and a few other bosses with fire attacks, or to buff up crit builds like Dan. Ernest does a lot of what he does but has better equipment options, the Colonel, Feedback, buffs. Sophie on floor 2 would be too early so maybe push her recruitment back to day 2 or 3 but it would help with getting her out early to compete against Joel who is by far the stronger guaranteed character even if he NEEDS the coat of arms or rage armor to compete later. Coat of arms is prob better since more people want it over rage armor and you can just dupe it with Frederic. But Rage Armor does give him guaranteed 50% attack buff (basically he always starts the battle with Teething pre-active but without the guard bonus from Teething or the enemy draw effect of Biting Armor).I also want to see some traders or NPCs show up at Eugenes or Mutt's shop after you take out the Rat King and maybe make it so once you open up ground floor they break the planet seals so it's always open for traders to pass through.

Coat of arms can be used to help keep Teething active all the time on Joel and Rage Armor is nice for weaker encounters to just have him start attacking turn 1 guaranteed without relying on Coat of Arms proc to land. Both Joel and Audrey are the only guaranteed 'tanks that can reliably draw aggro' in the game since everyone else needs the Picklehaube (which you might not get till day 14) and Sam can personally get a skill from a video game (Hurt Me Plenty) to draw aggro - but that may never show up. You do have the option for the worm juice from Kevin for other characters to reliably draw aggro but that requires doing the Nestor plot sooner. Just make sure to save Eugene since he's more useful alive till the shop reaches max level.Leigh also really wants coat of arms since having to activate beast takes a turn. I don't think Hellen cares that much since Stab is insanely useful & cheap even without stalk up but she does have similar absurd stat gain to Joel/Audrey to justify using the coat of arms without facing half the penalties others get. Papineau can spam bear hugs with it but I think he is fine with the patchwork set to max his HP + other hp buffs instead to have stronger bear hugs. Roaches can just stay stuck in schism. Ernest doesn't care and would mostly use it to spam guns/Feedback/weapon skills. Morton is prob better off with the fidget item that gives him a guaranteed second attack over a 30% chance at a second turn. Aster is in similar spot to Ernest - just doesn't do anything notable with it. Xaria has mosh pit but could be used outside of Moshpit on her or Monty to combo their abilities with each other but not the best use. Rat Child - doesn't have the stamina/skills for it outside of some of Morton's/Hellen's skills. Sam is obviously a good candidate. Spider/Audrey/Lyle can't wear it.

Notably Joel is one of the best characters to get all the way to 20 since his stat gain is absurd. Audrey and Hellen afterwards. A few of the more monstrous/tanky characters also get pretty strong from getting to 20 or just tankier like Roaches/Papineau/Phillipe/Rat Child/Spider/Lyle.Side note: don't bother with crosswords UNLESS you get Morton. You want the game as well but Morton makes it WAY FASTER.

And yeah that is the main issue with Coat of arms on the more human characters with worse stats. Lyle feels kinda undercooked atm but I don't really want to just spam instant death spells to kill bosses and I have yet to get him to level 14 for Soul Taker. He does have an Acid attack and a 4 times attack + a HP drain attack but all his abilities are expensive and I find the damage lack luster so far. His cloak isn't that good unlike Roaches Cowboy Hat + Trenchcoat setup or Ernest's Colonel in Jewelry Slot.I still need to do Honko's fight since I tried crosswords last playthrough without Morton and just the game and it basically took up two whole days and I was disappointed in Spear of the Word for the final boss fights on Sam. Chrome Finish is prob more useful than Demon Plating just cause you can passively draw aggro to counter and protect your teammates then easily heal off whatever damage you take with the Crimson Ring. And Marc Andre is really really worth grabbing for Audrey and in general. Also glitch world status effects might be worth it too for Audrey but I haven't looked into those yet.Audrey is really good once the elevator is open since you can just go back to your apartment inbetween harder boss fights later on in the game to have a single meal to get back most of her stamina. She is kind of a late game powerhouse.
Should I restart? I'm on Day 5. My first two days were pretty optimal: I looted the third floor, got Leigh, got the first two discs, and then on the second day got Papineau, Audrey, Joel, and all the stuff on the ground floor.Third day is where I think I got a little shaky: I used all of my molotovs to save Ernest even though I never really used him, did the landlord's apartment up until the stage where you get the basement key (but didn't get it) and killed the Stargazer for the void disc. I also killed the Freds for the painting.My problem now is that I have the basement key, but everything kinda destroys me. My party is Lyle, Audrey and Leigh, and I don't have the thing to stop Leigh from killing someone every time she goes beast mode for another day. I also never got any of the worthwhile merchants - Sam has Nitro Boost but nothing else because I never saw the game seller. Never got any of the door recruitables either.Should I just trudge through the sewers and hope I can turn Audrey into something useful once I get to the parking garage? I feel like I can barely kill anything in the landlord's apartment and killing the APC/Trench Digger is probably out of the question. I also don't want to touch the ice apartment without a flamethrower. I want to go for the Promise ending though I made all the dialog choices for True Final.
