>>730298169>Some people, actually many people, resent being challenged in any way.correct.>They love to think of themselves as skilledprojection. people who dislike "skill platformers" and other "skill genres" like soulslikes or arena FPS don't think in these terms at all. this obsession with skill is yours, not theirs. casuals don't suffer grievous narcissistic injuries every time they touch a "skill game", they simply don't have fun because they aren't looking to retry the same task many times to learn it. that is not what they came for, so when they find out it's the main course of the meal they leave.these games are niche because they over time had to (?) cater to a niche (genre fans like you) and now all they offer is "muh challenge", and not enough else. catering to a niche has made them impossible to enjoy for newcomers. not because newcomers can't get good but because statistically most newcomers simply aren't looking to git gud, period. most gamers want to experience flow state, not grind attempts. needing to repeat a portion of gameplay is annoying to casual gamers, and this includes highly experienced gamers venturing out into an unfamiliar genre. like, I'm an AFPS veteran and in FPS I will keep trying because something compels me to. it's what I like. but let me keep it real, I would never play Meatboy because I simply do not care about the idea of getting good at sidescrollers. not my thing. even though I do care about skill in MY genre(s).as genres specialize - crystalize - they become more and more repellent to everybody outside of a bubble. the fantasy of a game is important. if the fantasy (being a 2D jumping dude or a 3D shooter dude) doesn't appeal to the individual he's not going to grind out attempts.
>>730316131Because it's the way to play the song. You have to play those notes to play the song. Just like you have to jump a specific way to complete the jumps in precision platformers. This is not hard to understand.
Of course /v/ would hate games that are difficult lmao
>>730313881>all platformers are memorizers. No, in a good game you just play naturally and react to what's ahead. That's not to say enemy patterns and behavior aren't to be memorized but you're not going through the entire level on muscle memory.
>>730308597You asked this question three hours ago and for some reason no one bothered to post the correct answer.
>>730297067I actually did some of this for the harder levels in a game, but the move list was diverse enough to make it a little more interesting.
>>730316192Learning an instrument is fun because you make nice sounding noises and can expressive yourself creatively. I already said that. Does memorization in precision platformers offer that? What's your point? I'm not "scared" of precision platformers, if I wanted to play one I would inevitably develop the muscle memory required to get proficient through playing, my point is why should I waste my time doing that insteadof playing something more fun?
>>730297943Why b do sonyfags always call everyone who dislikes bad games Nintendofags? In any case the problem is that none of it is platforming it's just trial and error nonsense
>>730297067I don't get it. What is there to platforming if there's no precise platforming? I don't get it. And I don't even like platformers, I don't like it how I never feel like I'm getting better at the game no matter how much I play because I have to brute force learn each new hard room from scratch. I find that very unrewarding. But that's because I just don't like the genre at all. That's the whole genre. What is there to the platforming genre if not this? Literally what is left?
>>730317610>Learning an instrument is fun because you make nice sounding noises and can expressive yourself creatively. You're playing a song made by someone else. It's THEIR creativity, not yours. You have to play it the way they wrote it to play it. You have to follow along the sheet music.Where's the expression?
>>730304892It's weird how you lower your standards for a generic indie game.
>>730314826celeste is just super meat boy for trannies
>>730317754Learning an instrument means you can improv your own music if you feel like it. You can't improv a platforming challenge into existence.
>>730297067Konami / Ultra games did this firstbut no, keep going with your shit zoomer games
Double jump, air stalls, and air dash ruined platformers. Those mechanics are fine for combat heavy games, but platformers, these stink. I don't care if you disagree.
Okay first you're completely ignoring >make nice noisesNext, what the fuck even is your argument? Sheet music exists so that's the only way to play music? Where's the wall of spikes preventing somebody from playing a song however they want? Or making their own music? This is the most nonsensical contrived analogy ever, gouge out your eyes and neck yourself you buffoon.

>>730320829Dying is fun.
What if precision platforming isn't something you enjoy or hate with any passion, but just bores you? I'm more of a fan of players needing to get creative with movement tools to create the precision themselves, so they can reach places or skip segments without the game explicitly telling them. Maybe not all, but just about every precision platformer I've seen have the answer laid out for the player, and they grind it out to become consistent. No room for creativity or thinking on the player's part, no meta about what the best route is to get through a platforming sequence, it's snuffed out from the start.Players like to feel like they can cheat the game even if the designers likely accounted for players being able to take advantage of movement tools in ways the game didn't mention. There's definitely a satisfaction to being stubborn and practicing until you can do something no one else thought to do, or was thought impossible. Like those guys that broke through Hyrule's force field to skip a huge chunk of the game in Wind Waker. It's what made Mario Maker 2 courses fun, because I'd find routes that I was pretty sure amateur designers didn't account for. Me and this one guy went back and forth and took the record for one NSMB style course from 46 seconds all the way down to 27 (best I could do was 29).
Precision platforming to this degree just turns into rote memorisation and that isn't fun
>>730297067If the jumps can barely be made, then the spikes are purely cosmetic. Any jump that would make it by default wouldn't hit the spikes.I Wanna Be the Guy actually made a joke about this with the spike room almost 20 years ago.

Platformers are rage games now.You can't make something that's just fun, where you can fail but the game isn't trying to throw cheap shit at you to force you to fail. It has to make you angry so streamers can squeeze 2-10 hours out of talking over it while reacting to bullshit setbacks.
>>730320374There's a reason why every shitty music player loves jazz. Music is an act of creation, and for you to think playing an instrument starts and stops at playing sheet music, or someone else's music just shows everyone you are an autist. No learning an instrument is not the same as getting good in a singular video game.If your game is "fun" because it makes you learn, and that's it. You simply like this fun the most because you were diligent enough to do what the game Dev wanted. You need real creative endeavors man. It's easy, go to a bar that has local bands this Friday and ask any of them what is their favourite part of playing an instrument.None will ever suggest it was memorizing hand position and pace from a YouTube video. But that is only what Celeste is. How you argue about music should show you why your ideas are bad.You completely miss the point of playing an instrument,

>>730314940>>730315017The evil side doesn't do that, which is why I think Matt's "it was always planned" is bullshit. The evil self preys on Madeline's insecurities but she just says that she's a selfish and flawed person. If Madeline was "always planned" to be trans the evil self should have said things like "You're not a woman." "Everyone knows you're a guy." "You'll be buried with your real name." "You will never pass." etc.

She's not supposed to be Madeline's evil side, but her rational side. What she wants is for Madeline to go home and relax, because that's what Madeline wants too, deep down. Madeline's just here on Mt. Celeste because she's tired of wasting days away and starting projects only to never finish them, and wanted to do something outrageous to prove to herself that "Yes, I CAN do it!" Madeline reconciles with Badeline by acknowledging that "yes, climbing the mountain is dumb as fuck and I want to go home, but I still want to do it anyway, and I need to be whole to do it."Also her stated favorite hobby is getting drunk and arguing with retards online. She probably browses 4chan.
>>730324661>Trannies LOVE the autistic, memorization-based, speedrun style gameplay.See, that's how I know the "transwomen are a woman's mind trapped in a man's body" argument is bullshit. >>730330851Life systems are more important for arcade style games, where you have limited attempts to actually beat the game and mistakes are punished more harshly. Maybe it's just me, but it's a vastly different feeling than being slapped on the wrist for a mistake and just being sent back to redo the part you screwed up. I'm not saying platformers without lives are wrong but I don't like how every game is designed much more around the latter style than the former nowadays.
>>730317869Celeste is closer to kaizo than super meatboy, it's just kaizo mario but way more readable so anyone can play it and with a better moveset. Super meatboy is kind of total ass, a lot of games mentioned in these threads are dumb xbox live arcade normalfaggot slop.
>>730297067Thats basically also a level design of most of mario world hacks.
>>730336152>posts literal tranime
>>730336427I don't care about trannies and mostly think they are a positive influence on video games because they're killing AAA IPs, like no tranny has ever ruined the types of games i play. Can't say the same for normalfags though.
>>730336080But in arcade games unless you mean actual pay to play arcades you're also just being slapped on the wrist. You're never set back more than a few minutes, maybe up to 10 in extreme cases. That's still nothing.
>>730336908With save systems and how easy it is to get lives in modern platformers that actually have them, I don’t disagree. I just believe that completely removing them is a huge detriment to certain games. Playing something like the original Mario Bros without a life system wouldn’t really be the same experience. I’m aware there’s an exploit to get max lives, but you get the idea.
>>730297067the problem is that you no longer get to approach or interact with the level in your own way. the buttons and timing necessary to proceed have been predetermined, you just need to decipher them. >>730297460>30 seconds of zero platforms. >in a "platformer".

>>730338727Celeste has more ways of beating its stages than a mario game does, like objectively a lot more, this is just wrong and insanely ignorant. Like if you were to look up 7-C on youtube, I can guarantee you the inputs used to beat the stage would not be identical to that anons webm
>/v/tards coping about hard games saying it's memorization "autism" when that applies to most if not all games in terms of platforminglol, imagine if Captchas made you play a simple iwbtg needle level, the seethe would be priceless.

>>730341138I have, albeit not the original and only the fangames, the needle ones would be fun as apart of a captcha system much like that one doom captcha thread showcased and it's simple enough in nature to implement.forcing people to play hard video game captchas would cure this site of its problems and hopefully kill a bunch of undesireables in the process; the best kind of april fools that could be done is that and oekakis being the only way to use attachments.

>>730340765I like hard platforming games but smw kaizo hacks are another level of gigatism
>>730345580My problem with them is that, despite 'muh memorization' being a meme thrown around here, I think it actually applies about those.Maybe if I played more SMW fangames and I had a better understanding of the physics it wouldn't feel that way, but it feels like most of them want you to juggle shells mid air while knowing what's ahead. So I never bothered playing them.Love platformers to be clear.

>>730345182Answer the question faggotThis shit is exclusive to modern platformers
>>730344737You won't see tranny namecalling in threads with normal platformers. Face it: these types of games require you to repeat the same area hundreds of times before you can proceed. It's the same thing as speedrunning, but here the challenge is self-imposed. Hence the trannies.
>>730345939You're just obviously wrong, being wrapped in hazards has been present forever, mega man has it, donkey kong has it, like literally every platformer that isn't hold to the right and press A while 10 billion enemies spawn in has it. >>730313881If you had to memorize the levels to beat, say, SMB3, you may be clinically retarded.
>>730358597Pixel art is good but I got filtered hard.
>>730358625>takes no damage because ???Because actual good game design and the foresight to make hit boxes smaller than the objects visually representing them, as the opposite feels terrible.
>>730297067You need to go to that extend to create difficulty in games with infinite amounts of retries. We lost a lot when developers stopped putting limited lives and continues in their games and allowed players to save almost anywhere/at all times.
>>730359707>actually the hitbox doesn't correspond to the character at allThere is no world where this is good design.
>>730359719>We lost a lotThis is an interesting assertion but I'd argue it's the opposite and it enables better and more complex design, and far more challenging setpieces become accessible to a general audience. A lot of the games you like are probably too easy for me to enjoy, but we can both play and beat Celeste. Furthermore, /v/ will not play truly difficult platformers with a life system, trying to get /v/ to play annalynn is like pulling teeth. And I expect /v/ would endless whine about old games like GnG or Psychic 5 and how routing heavy they are. When you mix difficulty and limited lives, you get a routing game. Which is too hard for /v/, just look at shmup threads
>>730359719Infinite amount of retries and save anywhere/at all times are completely different things.Lives are a shit mechanic, saving anywhere is too.
>>730297067Pixel precision is bad design in general. You're not making a game, you're making an exam. There's no system and no space for the player to make any meaningful choices in.
>>730360403>>730360554Just do what NES Ninja Gaiden does where you start from the beginning of the level when you lose all your lives. You can make levels as hard as possible and the player will still feel a sense of mastery from beating the early parts of the level so many times.Better than to grind a section until you get lucky.
>>730297460Everybody wanks the shit out of this game but it looks so bad

>>730328815Meat Boy has an abundance of buzzsaws, but for the most part they’re deliberately placed. They kinda have to be; there’s no dashes or double jumps, you get jump and wall jump. It can’t be tunnel-o-spikes because you are required to touch platforms.
>>730360603You aren't making choices when obstacles aren't present. Video games aren't some free-form jazz. The choice occurs at the obstacle, and you're free to make the sub-optimal one, which may or may not result in your death. Like if we look herehttps://youtu.be/jNE6lSSbYNMThere are no substantial glitches here, but despite being very punishing this many, many hours faster than a casual player could clear the game, even subtracting time wasted on user error. Secondly, I would argue strict sequences aren't inherently bad, and that games are not supposed to be some sort of free-form jazz, and to say otherwise is a profoundly abhorrent misunderstanding of what a game is.Diversity and complexity comes from very dense obstacles and methods to navigate them, not wide open spaces that don't communicate when you're playing poorly, and ultimately that's what comments like these boil down to, getting butthurt because the game is effectively communicating that you're a bad player.
>>730361027SMB was great but the spiritual sequel The End is Nigh was so much better. It feels so good to control Ash. Fuck the no death carts though.
>>730360749>Just do what NES Ninja Gaiden does where you start from the beginning of the level when you lose all your livesBut ninja gaiden is really easy and boring. You can't point to any part of it and say "that's good and memorable design". Not a single second of that game has left any lasting impact on me.
