This way, your opponent is still screwed even if they catch your move with RE because you can still step, launch after they whiff their RE strike and combo them for 1/3rd of their health. Those moves are usually much faster than guard break moves so they don't risk you getting countered. The problem is that this property is not tied to the amount of recovery on block but on whiff. Nothing in the game tells you which moves those are and you will not be able to tell it even with a frame data sheet since that only lists values on hit, block and counter. Wikis also don't have this information most of the time. The only way to learn this is to play for a long time, watch others play, or have someone else tell you.

Yes, it has unique CaS fighting styles and the biggest roster in the series to date, but those move sets are pretty tiny and use animations that look like they don't belong (some Anon on /vr/ told me that they come from Tekken but I haven't verified it because I don't play Tekken). CotS was very cool conception-wise, but the gameplay in that mode isn't amazing. Virtually every mission boils down to killing every enemy on the map and it's always pretty easy because your units revive while the enemy units don't. They can have hard AI and buffs, it doesn't really matter. As long as you leave one unit at the base, you're virtually invincible. Only the last mission offers decent challenge because your units die permanently. Overall, SC3 could have easily benefited from longer development time and an early arcade release. Yes, it did get one in the end, but only after the home console version released. There was only about two years between the home console releases of SC2 and SC3 while there was about four between SC1 and SC2. Furthermore, the decision to make it a PS exclusive was questionable.

Still, I don't believe that virtually every 3D fighter series falling off is a coincidence. Even Tekken isn't doing so hot lately. This points to a more systematic problem than any one person's malicious activity.

So, what makes Soul Calibur different from other fighting games? Only one I played was the GameCube one ((I played it when it first came out so this was like two decades ago) because of Link and he was apparently the shittiest character in that one. I really want to enjoy SC because the coom is good, the grafx are pleasant, and it's one of the rare 3D fighters with actual good movement. But weapon based combat just isn't fun imo.
