Hello. I'm back. Talk about vidya you liked or forgotten games you also enjoyed.

As always, I'll start with mine. Don't be shy now!

I couldn't give less of a shit about the story or whatever. Hotline Miami had exactly one point, and that was to go fast and kill shit with zero pause while the OST is blasting in your ears. They did well on the OST part but they fucked up by making some of the levels janky and with bullets from offscreen.

It was still fine.
>>
>>730457027
NTA but I always thought that they barely even playtested some levels, most notably Beard, and especially Seizure. Low visibility and glass house galore.

Maybe not entirely forgotten but rarely discussed. I had it sitting on my HDD for years and finally got to replay it recently, the game still feels like a fever dream, it's ridiculous how ambitious it is, how ahead of its time, and it's mind blowing how a literally who french studio managed to get David Bowie to make the soundtrack for it. You can even assist to a virtual concert of some exclusive songs of Bowie in the game, which sounds like some made up bullshit but is actually true.

How did we get here?
>>
>>730464798
Explain. WET was a low budget Tarantino/Kill Bill adaptation that focused on fun gameplay mechanics. Nu Tomb Raider is an Uncharted rippoff
>>
>>730464798
I mean, I doubt they took inspiration from WET when making Nu-Tomb Raider, even less than contributing to Nu-Lara's design. It's just that WET has similarities to Uncharted/Tomb Raider's climbing and parkour sections.
Also:

Rubi Malone > NuLara

>>
>>730465925
Stealth is your number one priority. You can kill enemies instantly by sneaking up on them and hitting the attack button. It's recommended you take the Poison Rice; guards will leave their path to get it, meaning you can manipulate them to get into prime spots to take them out (and if you kill them before they eat it, you can re-use it infinitely). Also you can kill dogs :( with a single shuriken

Use big jumps if you don't trust the standard jump (forward twice+jump) (back, forward, jump for reverse moonsault)
Crouch and cling to walls to minimize your profile
Use the "look around" button to see further

Combat is pretty barebones and you run the risk of alerting other enemies to your location and/or dying. But it's necessary for boss battles, so learn the timing of your and the boss' attack

Unfortunately all the commands are in the manual, so unless you have it or look it up, you're flying blind. It's also admittedly a little janky at times

>>

Play on PC. It's on GOG and they throw in the soundtrack. I only played it on PS2 for years due to it being impossible to run on anything newer than Windows 7 up until about five years ago. Game was peak of my adolescence back in the early 00s.

Richard suddenly being an angel of death instead of the voice representing reason and rationality in Jacket’s mind already brought the narrative down. With already shallow characters serving a “meta-narrative” that honestly do not serve that much reason to exist in the main story. (Ex. The Fans, Manny Pardo)

So I wrote a paper using Microsoft Word explaining in detail that I understood the difference between reality and fiction. I would not become violent in real life. And that zombies are already dead people who just want to harm innocents, and it's okay to "kill" them. This was all printed on a piece of paper and I gave it to mom and made her read it while I was there.

She said OK fine and I got to play RE4 (rated 18+) on GameCube when I was 15 :)
Love you mom.

Pretty neat adventure game. The writing is cozy although rather aimed at teenage audience. No combining items or moon logic. It's all logic puzzles of various degree in difficult. Some of them (like dragon board game or minotaur maze) even took me a while to solve. On the negative there's definitely too much running around mostly empty screens (at least there's hint button to show you exactly where you need to go) and there's one point with moving stars where the game keep crashing for some reason (I brute force it by saving every couple minutes).
Also anyone has more obscure point'n'click games to recommend?
>>
>>730485268
First time I hear about the game. Back in a day I'd probably assume it's just a CoD knock-off. You're telling me there's more to this game?
>>
>>730513997
"Back in the day" cod wasn't what it is now, zoomer. Cod 4 was the big one, and that only came out on the next console gen.
Blacks whole gimmick was the destructible environments, plus physics, which was pretty interesting at the time.

That game was horny as fuck. Omikron had sex scenes before having sex scenes in video games became a thing. Also you could possess some very skimpy dressed sluts and go do fighting game segments with them for some sexy views. And there were bars with actual strippers as far as I remember. It was a good game for teenage boy.

El Shaddai was one of many
>yeah why the fuck not
games I burnt when I had a newly-flashed/cooled/HDDhack'd 360 and a 100x DVD9 cakebox to mess with. To justify the fact you bought a pricey stack of Verbatims, an XGD3-friendly burner, and a bigger hard drive, a lot of people on the trackers commented they were just grabbing the not-AAA's/splashless games to fill space, and this was one of my first. If you liked Nier and Asura's Wrath, it scratches the playable anime itch. I just saw it got a remaster during the sale too, extremely okay PC port, but a resolution bump is really all it needed

Downloading 360 games for the fuck of it revealed that even then, we were still 100% justified in not trusting reviews back then. I had a lot of fun with alleged 5-7's outta 10's like Dante's Inferno, Splatterhouse, Stranglehold, Jurassic, Eat Lead, etc. It's been said to death, but we were too harsh on gen 7, and having lots of games to fuck with showed that it wasn't nearly THAT brown

Undying was one of those games that got a second wind like Deus Ex and System Shock because various forums helped rehab it's rep, a lot of people had high hopes and were expecting something better than Undying, which it wasn't, so reactions were pretty harsh. It's pretty fun and hammy though, it's just not Undying 2.0, it's Painkiller + the writer's barely-disguised fetishes

I paid $5 for it during a flash sale in 2010, it's now $200+ on keysites, wew

That game was cool. Someone gave my dad a demo disc at his work to give to me. I had never seen an RTS game from that perspective before. There aren't many games like that. It was like one step above an fps. It took me a while to get the hang of using both fireteams. The 3rd person perspective scratched an itch that most top down rts games didn't. I'm surprised there aren't more games like it. It could cater to both fps and rts players.

Skateboard Park Tycoon was very fun as a kid, back when tycoon games (and skateboarding) were cool
wasn't very advanced and I think they stopped making them when THPS came out, but I loved it

it wasn't a sophisticated tycoon game, and the skating animations weren't great, but you could build very fun parks
nowadays skate games let you place objects, but it's way too much work to build a whole park

Literally only reason I heard of this game was from the controversy.

They could have just made it all white men and it would do fine.

I think at the time philosophy just shifted to quality of quantity. Gen 6 for as much as I love it, lets be honest, just had way too much. Most people will never even touch every gen 6 game given a lifetime. Also games were "growing up" as a medium, not in the gay way of story and cinematography but actual stuff like testing and reiteration, expert studies, and developers having played video games as kids. Like a lot of the jank was just completely hammered out that generation people were really intent on not shipping an unrefined product. Also this was proto live service games. I remember the first time hearing the term "lifestyle games" from ec most those types of games came out this era. Just seemed like if you had the formula right, why try other games? (inferior)

>what if Fire Emblem but with giant robots?

This franchise deserved better than some low effort remakes

Probably talking about Yuji Naka getting arrested for insider trading a few years ago. Game was developed by his own studio.

Yeah I've thought about playing it for ages.

>>730578090
It's an amazing game, but I can't play it anymore -- there's something about the way it renders that causes me severe headaches.
>>
>>730578202
Sounds awful, wonder if it's a epilepsy sort of thing or something
>>
>>730577398
nah just look up wii vs wii u comparison there were a lot of development issues
>>
>>730578352
It's the only old game that causes this, I don't know why. Never had any remotely comparable issues.

Shining in the Darkness. Shining Force tends to get all of the fame and it's genuinely deserved, but I though SitD was really good too. The art style was very expressive and it was cool looking around town. I loved how all of the abilities had an associated image and didn't have stupid names like Phantasy Star 2. All of the different moves were really useful too, even insta-death! Being able to use different strength spells by adjusting the yellow ticks was really great design. The ability that let's you see the map was cheap and I thought that was a good idea. The fact that you can sell unique items to vendors and they'll just hold on to them was great for preventing fucking up your game. Just unexpectedly a really great game.

is it actually good? i remember people shitting on it on release
>>
>>730513997
gameplay wise it is pretty slow but it compensates with cool explosions and guns.
it is worth a playthrough

i literally played it last week and it one of the worst games I ever experienced.
shit is fucking terrible
>>730561903
there is zero comparison aside from the fact you play as a with killing demons.
>>
>>730531824
fighting force 1 was fucking based. not sure why FF2 was so different.
>>
>>730578673
Oh, yeah, that's what I meant when I mentioned the publishers fucking over the original developers. The original Wii game would have been ready for release back in 2011 if the publisher didn't insist on making sure a shitty 3DS port done by a completely different, inexperienced dev team could be released simultaneously with it.

It is.

Don't click it. It's porn.

Cassette Beasts

I really liked it. The graphics, world design and music really drew you. The setting was based on the devs' hometown, iirc so it had a lot of soul. It's a pokemon-like with an 80s spin on it and some new ideas, one being that super effective attacks also have a bonus effect. Using wind on a fire type will actually kick up a mini storm that gives them a shield, using grass on ground will plant seeds that drain HP, etc.

The monster designs were pretty good across the board, but the dev team is woke, the characters are all completely safe and asexual, there's a fakeout gotcha lesbian couple, a shakespearean character was added and blackwashed (not kidding), and the game shot itself in te foot by appealing to and being seized by the trans crowd. Community is a minefield, but the game itself is fun for a first playthrough.

Damn shame though, it feels like the game could have been way more that it turned out to be. They even added online multiplayer that leaned into the teambuilding and battle mechanics.

This shit. Its pretty cool action RPG with fun combat system where you juggle enemies with your AI partners. It never came in NA it only released in Japan and Europe for some reason thats why it might be very unknown.

That's the anime Wizard of Oz right?
>>
>>730580681
Never seen Wizard of Oz so cant tell.
>>
>>730580528
Not sure I'd call Cassette Beasts forgotten or not talked about, but yeah it is pretty good and often overlooked because of how woke it is. Probably one of the few games I can say that is good despite all that.
>>
>>730580834
It’s an alright movie, not that long. You should see it.

I just remember hearing it was VERY loosely based on that story/film. I don't think I'm making that up.

I grew up with it. I like the run down gothic euro town it was set it. I like the combat. It did grapple hook to enemies before DMC 3. It actually let you regular dodge forward unlike DMC. And it had a shooting while dodge animation/move before DMC 5. I liked that Hugh Jackman can get his hat knocked off and you can choose to pick it up or lose it and it is reflected in the cutscene. I like that this game is packed with unlock-able cheats and costumes. It's just a such a fun game. I just wish there was a psp version of this game.
>>730485268
Black is fun. I can't wait to get a better hdmi converter for my tv. You know how hard it it to play ps2 games when everything looks dark? Is the RetroScaler2x any good?
