But unlike real life, their games don't have that many views where you can see distant mountains, so they bring the fog in closer to give the illusion of objects in the distance being further away, making the world feel larger. Baba is You goes for solid-color backgrounds with single-color sprites because it's a grid-based puzzle game where the ability to clearly see what's going on at a glance is incredibly important. Minit and Downwell both go for the "1bit" style of extremely limited color palettes using only black and white (plus Red, in Downwell's case), which would make detailed backgrounds functionally impossible since you'd lose track of the character almost immediately. The only game there that doesn't have any real mechanical justification for a white blob guy character is Fez, and that's because the whole joke with Fez is that the main character belongs to a race of pixelated generic retro game NPCs that aren't supposed to resemble much of anything.

With Baba any pastel color would have worked they didn't HAVE to chose white and it still would have kept clarity.
The thing is they wanted it to look like some blobby pet animal and you can get white cats, dogs, hamsters, whatever but not light blue/green ones.
Ori could have been a different color, but the game has some fairly bright areas, it's difficult to see the fucker even with it being neon white.
Rain world and Hollow Knight didn't have to have monochoromatic main characters either; however hollow knight has every boss and enemy bright white too so it's just to keep it themetic. Rain world isn't as bad as Ori but it is just for clarity.

so while they didn't need to be white, in most cases it's just the best option considering the asthetics.
At that point people aren't criticising characters but the games overall asthetics; and i'd rather all those games to the shitty low-effort pixel "haha it looks like (cheap budget cash grab games) from the 80s!" other indieslop does

Red, black, and green are the three classic dragon colors.
In color theory, green, especially that shade of grass-green, is generally thought of as a friendly color compared to red and black, which are more associated with violence and evil. While not fitting in with classical depictions of dragons, it makes sense why they wanted Spyro to be green when he's the protagonist.

Since the Dragon-Elvarian War was the last major conflict Frydar Island was involved in, the Doom Dragon now lives peacefully in an underground terrarium in Fortress Fygoon's basement.
If you couldn't tell, the Doom Dragon is basically the Frydarian equivalent of the Fat Man, but while the Americans took pity on Japan and rebuilt it to combat communism, communism is an alien concept to the Frydarians (only being introduced by an alien Dinosaur in a weird flying machine) so they enslaved the losers instead, taking them to their island only to mock their existence.
I would refer you to the website to read more about the Dragon-Elvarian War, as it is a very important event in Frydarian history, but I still need to write up the timeline of events preceding that war, including the Naming Race and the beginnings of political alliances with neighboring Goloomaia and Dosornar Islands.

Professional skills, a specific deadline, and a paycheck will do that for a game. Most indie development happens among groups of like 3-5 people who are amateurs in every field they contribute to the game. The tools being easier can only contribute so much.
