I recently got into 3D modeling, so I'm replaying some of my favourite games a bit to examine their assets.Replaying Dark Souls, I couldn't help but notice how many jars like this there are that are simply standing around everywhere. But for what purpose? I'm not gonna ask why they're empty, just like I'm not going to ask why are the boxes and barrels are empty, since that's obviously not done on purpose, but I have to wonder, if these jars weren't empty, what would they even be used for? What justifies their abundance in the game world? Here we see a couple of jars standing around in the undead asylum.
Here we see plenty of jars standing around in firelink shrine.
>>730525609>>730525868
>>730525609They're fun to break
>>730525609They store corpses. They're jars becuase lordran had abundant clay deposits so it was cheaper than caskets.
>>730526068Sure but it's hard to believe that's the only reason they exist considering there are also other more practical items in the world that you can break, such as this here barrel.
>>730525609>>730525868name 1 other spot
>>730525609Often for decoration. Sometimes objects like those fill a space that looks too empty while adding a bit more personality to it.
Rolling through masses of them is a feels good man.
>>730525609you need lots of jars when you don't have refrigerators yet.
the camo spell
>>730526512Blighttown has niggas in jars and New Londo has some jars too.
While most houses are petty empty except for some boxes or barrels, there are a couple that have some actual interior, such as this house in upper undead burg that might've been an eatery or pub. At least there are several tables with plates and such on them.
>>730526887This shelf even has a couple of plates stacked on top. Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of that as I was instead examining these mugs and pots closely.
>>730526512it would be easier to name a spot without them.
>>730525609because of Chameleon, I'm going to also make an assumption that Undead Asylum may have been an area that could have been invaded on the revisit but was too hard to implement
>>730526887>>730527153I mistook this for Eternal Ring screenshots initially. Got to wonder if both games use the same assets.
>>730527902There must be some lore reason though, otherwise they could just be barrels and such. I'm not asking why there are props there, I'm asking why this specific prop. Of course chameleon is a consideration for whether there are props, but which? Barrels could make sense pretty much anywhere.
>>7305256091. you could just think up some reason, like ritualistic body storage, like we see with some bodies. I forgot if there are any in ds1 though2. they needed something to fill up the maps
>>730528134More like Elder RingBcuz ur fuckin oldGramps
Also I noticed that the right side light reflection on the knight armor is there no matter the lighting situation. I wonder if it's just baked into the texture, or if it's reflecting the players light, as the player in demon's souls and dark souls does have a cone of light around them.
>>730528507
>>730528507Turning around in that tunnel just keeps the light on the right side, so it's self lighting or the texture.
>>730528507keep in mind that if you're playing the demaster it has broken lighting and no cubemaps ptde doesn't have that problem and has lighting intact
>>730530832this is the switch version which has ptde lighting as the switch isn't powerful enough for the demaster. i find it shocking that you can't immediately tell that it's not the butchered lighting considering you seem to care about it
huh, sweetie, it's called god tier level design????
>>730530832
There's no good reason of course, but a crappy one is that vases are just the main container they use to transport things because reasons.
>>730525868Very tall clay jars like those were used to store food, sometimes in very elaborate storage structures with cranes to lower or raise them from holes dug on the soil. Look for the pithos of Knossos Palace. This was back in the Bronze Age. They could store grain, oils (olive oil), honey, wine.Considering Firelink Shrine was built to aid the undead in linking the fire, if you assume they need to eat then it makes perfect sense there'd be pithos all over the place to store resources for them.Pithos were very abundant when they were in use, clay is very cheap and they were a very cost-effective way to store and transport food.
>>730525609They're chamber pots. In the player's jail cell in the asylum there's a jar with poop in it.
>>730531987>>730525609I wouldn't exactly put my chips on Miyazaki understanding the context of how pithos were used in the Bronze Age to store and transport food, but at least for Elden Ring it's very obvious they were taking notes from some ancient necropolis for Farum Azula, and I'd argue the large jar people look so similar to the largest Minoan vases they may have been direct inspirations. You can easily find pictures of those things on Wikipedia and there are many books covering these findings, so even if I don't think Miyazaki is some 4D genius it would be no surprise if he or his team had bought some illustrated archeology/gift shop books on Amazon to use as refs.Since you're getting into 3D modeling, OP, buying or pirating those books may be a habit you might want to pick up. I did and it's been very useful in my game dev.
>>730525609I think the right word to use is "urn".
>>730526683This. Ancient cultures fucking loved jars. There are entire cultures that we only know about because of their jars. Archaeologists are basically just jar experts.
>>730533331but these jars weren't 2m in height
>>730533527Dark Souls has giants in it.
>>730525609Zelda cultural baggage.
>>730533527These were >>730532875 >>730531987Ancient pithoi were huge
>>730525609they like to pickle peoplethread theme https://voca.ro/11sIzEVE7Oh5
Too lazy to make a new thread so this should suffice.Replaying through the souls series and I'm at Dark Souls 2 now and I did not remember how different this game feels compared to all the others. Anyway I do not remember if power stancing daggers is viable at all in this and if it is which ones do I power stance?
>>730534539IIRC Black Flamestone Dagger is the best because it has the range of a sword. But honestly if you want to powerstance you're better off going for rapiers.
>>730525934these have a purpose though
I still don't know if this ambush is defensible. It'd probably be fine if you just got roasted a bit, but if you're running and wearing light armour the counter damage can one shot you. Attempts to defend this segment usually talk about how you encounter the wyvern earlier in the level, and how if you look closely you can see charred bodies on the bridge. But at the same time we also see hollows just chilling on the bridge even though that's the wyvern's nest, and also whether you know that it's coming or not, it WILL hit you at least once. the only way to avoid damage is if you 100% know how quickly it's coming and keep walking back and forth and then run immediately backwards in case it spawns, but even exploiting this meta knowledge there's still a good chance of you getting roasted.
>>730536028it's ok to die
>>730525609>>730525868Jarring, isn't it?
>>730525609The only jar that should interest you is the unique one in your starting cell, especially once you start playing DaS2.
>>730525609>>730528592Is it just me or this game has really pleasant graphics/lighting? just watching these images makes me want to play it again for the aesthetics alone (but then I remember all the hassle parts). This is PTDE right? In the remaster the graphics look more washed out and ugly.
>>730525609>>730525868You can mass produce jars out of literal dirt and water, ancient cultures were completely inundated with pottery, more than they even knew what to do with. Ancient garbage dumps are often overwhelmingly full of shattered pottery.
>>730537028it's the switch version which preserves ptde lighting and particle effects because a different team handled it. and yes, it still has the quintessential dark fantasy look for me. nothing beats it. still looks great today, except some of the areas that have excessive colour filters
>>730537328all jars are pottery but not all pottery is jars.especially jars without lids seem to have limited usefulness.
>>730536028Anon you literally just run to the shortcut ladder room on the right side. You can do it 100% of the time without taking damage. It's funny how you say it's INDEFENSIBLE when literally every player on planet Earth has figured out the solution to it with zero help. It's a big fucking dragon, dumbass, you're playing as a piece of moldy beef jerky with a blunt sword, figure it the fuck out.
>>730537901you cannot reach that spot before he swoops in from behind as he spawns in instantly
>>730538078Wrong. Try it again you fucking retard.
>>730540131I've been playing this game since 2011.You're wrong and even if you weren't, you'd still be wrong because you'd require meta knowledge to start sprinting at an exact spot on the bridge when you know it'll spawn in from behind. Also, I think you're just confused and don't know that I'm talking about the very first time it sets the bridge aflame when it isn't sitting on the building yet.
>>730525609That's just how Fromsoft designs their areas. If you look around all their games you'll see that their architecture is nonsensical and littered with decorations that don't make any sense just to fill otherwise empty space.
>>730540767Elden Ring was pretty good about this actually for the most part
>>730525609probably various oils to keep the undead zombie's skin moisture pristine
>>730541296Not really. There's still random stuff everywhere like infinite gravestones, the walls are scarcely decorated, the decorations themselves are repeated often, the buildings still don't make any sense, there's nowhere anyone could live in the Lands Between, the layouts are clearly designed to be gameplay first, etc. It isn't necessarily a problem for the games, just how they do it.
They are used to store wine for weddings.
