Have you played Control?

Thoughts?

I liked it. Looking forward to Resonant.
>>
>>730582693
it's a decent game, think it's been offered for free on epig a few times now, worth grabbing on sale otherwise.

Biggest negative is that the game only really opens up once you get the flight/hover ability, which is given to you much too late in the game
>>
yeah, i like it, good atmosphere, fun to piece together what's going on, fun powers and shooting is satisfying. OST kinda sucks but it makes sense for the world, you'll understand why if you play it, and enemy variety is rather poor, hopefully they'll fix that in the sequel.

pretty fun superman with jedi powers game

the RNG mechanics was the downfall of the game though, and in their infinite wisdom they made it exponentially worse with the DLCs - most people won't even experience the 'fun' gameplay at it's optimal level, because the most optimal and fun ability mods won't even be encountered in the short amount of time that they'll tolerate and play the game.

they should've just stuck with a linear skill or stat system, that way people would've been able to play with a serviceable set of abilities and cooldown intervals, instead of whatever fucked up combination that people tend to make, which is also made worse by the RNG restricting what people are able to make
>>
>>730582693
Would've been better without
>skill tree
>crafting
>scrapping
>weapon mods
>Diablo loot with RNG stats
>text logs every 5 steps
>side quests
>"""open world"""
Why have devs forgotten how to make a straightforward shooter without all these awful pseudo-MMO elements that add nothing to a singleplayer game?

the biggest flaw of the game is making 80% of the gameplay this until you get the one ability that actually opens up the combat system

What are you talking about the best way to play is to take out dangerous targets with the sniper, the rest is arguably harmless and can be dealt in whatever ways and so the rerererepeating firefights have no impact. All style zero substance.
>>
>>730588039
(I predict that you may attack what I say under the presumption that I forgot about the hoovering ability so I'm making ot clearer: being able or not to fly around doesn't matter when nothing can pressure you into using it and when you can cancel dangerous targets with the concentrated shots of the sniper thing, yeah I can fly around so what? Like the shield I see little reasons to be forced into that stance outside of platforming so I despise it, like all badly balanced "go make your own fun" games. )

Decently enjoyable game that didn't do nearly enough with its premise, it played like a generic TPS with every enemy being a shooty grunt and the best parts of the game were the few setpieces where that wasn't the case, the hack n slash sequel looks much better in that regard so hopefully it turns out good.

Fuck 3rd worlders.
>>
>>730582693
It's pretty good but has some pretty significant drawbacks

The map fucking sucks and I'm tired of pretending that the fact there are signs mitigates that to any meaningful extent. The game world is designed like Metroid Prime, not having a nice 3D diorama you can open up makes going around the world an annoyance. After a while I stopped doing any sidemissions because I knew getting to the mission trigger was more of a hassle than the actual mission

Another thing is that way too many of the weapons feel like they're shooting wet farts, especially compared to the telekinesis ability, and that's before you even upgrade it. The TK launch is so much better than any of the normal weapons that it makes them totally redundant, and while launching blocks of concrete is fun as an option it starts to feel kind of stupid when it's your primary way of dealing damage

>>730587467
Correct take, although I think the very best outcome would have been an interconnected Metroid world without any of the RPG shit
>>
>>730589420

It's actually intended for you to just run at the enemy groups and melee them in-between shots & Launches and keep them off-balance and missing due to you moving. You're more likely to get hit by shrapnel and stray shots by hiding behind corners. The game's much easier and better paced when going full barbarian.

I didn't think it was bad but most of the game you spend hours kinda doing the same shit until you get towards the end. I think I got it for free, I forget. It's got a nice atmosphere and the story is fine.
But it feels kinda clumsy. The combat never really feels great. The missions end up being "go back to X and do Y", which isn't bad in itself but the areas seem like they're made for going through once, not backtracking through. The pistol upgrades are rarely interesting.
I like it, but it was almost despite the gameplay rather than because of it.

Movements weren't good enough so there wasn't anything really encouraging me to go and adopt better fighting strategies.
It doesn't obligatory mean that it needs soldiers all rushing at me in a game to force my hand into playing differently, it's a matter of engagement for the player. Are the fights fun? The guns feeling good to use? Does it get repetitive? If so how can we negate lassitude?
I was talking about vanquish earlier and I want to go back to it because there's so many things they did right. Take the cover system, how did they encourage the players to move around and drift? Did they send all the enemies to where the player is? No not immediately, in the confusion of a fight there's marines aiding you, it buy you some time so you may stay under cover. But if you do you won't get slow motion mode.
So you think "I'll roll backward or to the side, take a few shots and go back to cover!" expect that arena and camera is designed so cover elements, corners and teammates will get in your field of vision. So what they do subtly is incline the playfield in a direction inviting you to push forward or from the sides, you can jump from cover and get a clear sight + slow mo, or drift away from cover + slow mo whenever you want.
Also in all fights enemies not only react to being fired at, they also all have fragile vulnerable points, and the more dangerous they are, the harder that point is to expose.
Even during slow motion you can see bullets flying at you and if you don't get away from their trajectory you may get hurt.
Everything in the game is so dynamic and not simply in a visual way by having things getting destroyed with a full truck of particles flying around. Control doesn't have impact when using guns, running around is uncomfortable, TK power becomes your main tool in your kit and that's a big problem in a giant game that's many hours long. And big spongy enemies never ever feel good to take care of.

The most interesting parts of the game, were 100% side content. Other than the perkele janitor that is a strong entity, the main story plotline is terrible. Decent game, especially for those who got it for 7 dollars or something along that pricetag.
>>
>>730592159
2/2
there's big hp sponges in vanquish too but they get their balance shaken or get staggered, they have weak points, and I don't know precisely how they did it but no matter how big and strong enemies are it always feel good to fire at things in that game. That's the main thing any video game dev needs to realize. If you make a game where your guns feel like shit you can fuck off right away.
>>
>>730582693
Really great atmosphere and story. Gameplay started out strong, but got a bit stale by the end. From the trailer of resonant it looks like they’re improving gameplay variety. Just hope that doesn’t come at the cost of the atmosphere. Although remedy have a pretty good track record of nailing that, so I’m hopeful

liked it. didn't think i would.

the first few hours were not good. the writing was 'well, that just happened' tier.

it almost felt like they had to have a quota of cringe in the first 3 hours.

however, once you get several hours into the game, it dramatically improves in pretty much every way.

i had no idea it was a sam lake game, and the game doesn't come into its own until you feel that (things like the ash tray maze, director trench's messages, the hotel)

but yeah, by the end i was actually kind of sad it was over, and i found jesse increasingly more attractive throughout the game.

charge with three tier five+ damage boosts will one shot every non-boss or non-float enemy in the game.

shatter with the DLC mod and damage/projectile boosts will get rid of most bosses without a shield before it runs out of ammo
>>
For the game part >>730587467

For the narrative part, the game has some interesting and well-written characters (Darling, Trench), who are either dead or missing. OTOH characters who are actually present are boring and stilted cardboard cutouts. This goes double for the protagonist, who is inconsistently characterized, annoying, and overall unsympathetic. Her constant quips feel incredibly out of place among the horror and carnage and make her seem like a psychopath.

A standalone game about a secret government agency tasked with dealing with anomalous phenomena? Wonderful.

I just wish they had expanded on the oldest house, your supposed to be able to "always go deeper", but that didn't pan out, which I guess I could understand.
Also, not enough interactable anomalies/thresholds.

The fact they used the DLC's to shill Alan Wake crap when it could have been it's own thing is mildy disappointing though, not everything needs to be some Avengers-Tier massive crossover Remedy.

A solid 9/10 game. 8/10 with the expansions. Only thing that holds it back is the lack of real build variety. Telekenesis is so much better than anything else you can do that there's no reason not to build for it. Great level design, great story, fun combat and exploration.
>>
>>730596761
I don't think so?
Foundation just added the proverbial basement of the house to the maps.
A.W.E added a lost department of the agency that, to be honest, should have been a part of the base game from the beginning
>>
>>730582693

I´ve not played any of the Remedy games. I find the concepts, worlds and stories fascinating but the gameplays look like subpar TPS. Some mix in some horror survival, some mix in some gimmick like stopping time or flying or whatever and IDK, i find that approach kind of bland. I feel like if i wanted to play a TPS i would just play RDR or something. If they focused more on the exploration side of things i may feel differently because they do have some great conceptual ideas. Maybe they should just be making movies or tv shows instead of games.
>>
>>730596649
to be fair, in regards to more lore about oldest house,

there are a shit ton of lore items, particularly in the foundation dlc, that piece together around it. i think if they went further in describing it, it would have basically been spelling things out which they avoided, but there's a fairly strong fan theory that the oldest house is the world tree, it changes shape depending on eras, and ahti is either its personification or a some norse guy who pledged to protect it forever.

i also kind of liked how there was some implication that the 'former' creature is potentially the director before northmoor

i appreciate how many people the jukebox and the arcade game filtered

i was a little disappointed that the 'harder' modes of the jukebox are the exact same thing just with more debuffs, which kind of just made it RNG to me, since some debuffs were almost unwinnable like combination debuffs that made bosses such bullet sponges you can't win in time, or the accuracy buff that makes every enemy no-scope you.

because the easy solution to that is to just reroll until you get a nothing burger debuff like "spin damage reduced 100%!", as if anyone ever used that weapon for more than five seconds

Guarantee she's in it. She's in the trailer and it's about her brother.

I finished like 5 minutee ago, the ending sucked

>The sequel (if it comes out)
It's remedy, redditor. It will be released.
>>
>>730602290
it seemed more like a DMC-like game than a soulslike
>>
>>730582693
the amount of [REDACTED] shit on most reports makes the writing seem even more amateur than the SCP articles written by actual amateurs it's based on, but other than that the game is a perfectly fine TPS

>have a whole unexplored literal otherworldly city in the Oldest House
>make the game in NY instead
I get that NY assets are easier to make but it still feels like a missed opportunity if they end up never using the quarry city.

Get with the times, DMC is rollslop too now.
>>
>>730582693
I got it for free but didn't play it (too woke, sadly)
>>
Midwit trash

>This game came out in 2019 before woke was in gear
Leftists started their major push for wokeness in 2014, it began infiltrating entertainment in 2016.

>>730604904
Surreal how this their FOURTH (4th) GAME that takes place in NYC
>>
>>730605314
as I said, asset reuse.

It has an interesting premise that kept me interested. Looked good, ran good, lots to explore. My only complaint is that the combat got quite stale and never really put me in a situation where I actually had to utilize all the tools. 7.5/8 out of 10.
>>
>>730582693
A shit ending makes what should have been a great game just ok.
>>
>>730582693
Seemed decent (and it probably is) but i could not finish it, gameplay got extremely boring after a few hours.

Nah, I'm /pol/ personified so much that I hate women almost as much as the chosen. It's unreal.
Jesse was fine, the weirdo chipper exposition deliverer girl was fine, too. The black female spec ops "Best of the best of the best, of the best, Sir/Ma'am!" was annoying but never too much for me to stop playing.
It was an ok game that could have been exceptional. Ending sucked, but the exploration and story was interesting until it ended.

When the fuck is the Max Payne remake supposed to be out? They previously said it would be out first since it was in development the longest. But I guess Rockstar is in charge of the marketing and release since Remedy already announced control 2 while Max Payne has zero news around it.

>>730582837

>>730591576

>>730602050
could very well be the first game i bought since gta 5 on pc in 2015 in full price
>>730606438
probably around 2028 as a next gen launch title(also isnt both max paynes getting remade)
>>
>>730582693
ultimately I liked it
I think the gameplay is just serviceable, pretty standard Remedy stuff even with the powers
the setting and world building is its strongest attribute, but they didn't go quite far enough with it in the first game and I wish we left the Oldest House more than we did. I'm excited to see how they build on it
the story is probably the weakest aspect, it feels like they ran out of time or budget and we couldn't get a full section inside the projector
in all, I'm definitely interested in the sequel
>>
>>730606314
They did diversity right because being black or a woman was not the focus of the character, they just are.

It will come a year after GTA 6 is released, even if it's already finished. So pray that GTA doesn't get further delayed.
>>
>>730582693
I liked it, but it also wasn't what I immediately expected going in. I was expecting a SCP FPS. It was actually SCP Metroid Prime
>>
>>730582693
Good game, ugly face
>>
>>730582693
I'm about to play it for the 3rd time. Platinum'd it on PS5. Could read documents in this game forever, the lore is comfy.
>>
>>730582693
I thought it was cool. I enjoy xfiles inspired games.
>>
>>730582693
Just started playing it last week. Kinda trippy.
