I haven't played Rebirth yet, but I've played Remake. I loved Remake purely for some of the moments, but I wasn't a fan of the game as a whole. There were certain boss battles, moments between characters, etc. that were pure kino and made me love the game more than the original. I also love the new battle system, I think it's brilliant.Yet the more I think about it, it drives me crazy that the entire game is just Midgar. It's no longer just a simple opening arc to the game. There is so much padding like the ridiculous two hour long train graveyard and other nonsense. And then the random NPCs that don't fit in with the game's atmosphere at all.FF7R has some fun moments and a great battle system, but that's about it. Waterfall is risky because it requires everything to be pre-planned, and then produced, and if something doesn't add up either with the schedule or tech stack or the product just not testing well in Waterfall, it means you have to go back and reboot it, which is also why a lot of games react to failed milestones by rebooting the whole ass project, like Halo 2 for example.But I would argue it shouldn't be riskier to make a remake of a story you already know and know why it resonated. So you don't have to risk selling a game with a story people don't like, but in remaking everything else, yes, there's a huge risk, but at least you don't need to fuss over completing the narrative as you go in the same way. They opened that up enough to manage with the Plot Ghosts shit but ultimately it's the same narrative.But the issue is that they're developing it agile, so it takes 3 parts because it has to accomodate agile organization structure, and that's why you couldn't just make a fully focused 1-go remake without risk.

Like, going to space, Cloud and Tifa falling into the lifestream and reliving memories about Zack, and there's a giant walking dinosaur, and Cloud disappears for a while and is in a wheelchair and you play whole chunks of the game as Tifa and then Cid as the Party Leaders. You go to Junon again and there's a submarine, you also get the blimp, and you go to where Sephiroth supposedly is and it's a whole "evil lair" sort of thing as a mid-point.Like there's probably at least as much in this part as there was between leaving Midgar and Aerith dying, but yes as you say, Part 3 is mostly endgame stuff.That's why I think Part 3 is just a kind of "extended" part compared to the first 2, and why it probably takes them 3 years again to make, despite having their production pipeline in place.
