Just beat the first three Metroid Prime games and I'm wondering, can 4 really be worse than 3? I'm gonna buy it anyway, but I find it hard to believe they could make it worse than this.2 > 1 >>> 3

If you thought the ship was bad wait until you have to backtrack through the empty desert between every single area, with the areas themselves being essentially a straight line with at best one (hidden) shortcut that takes you from the entrance to the deepest part

prime 3 at least has a labyrinthine structure sometimes and enforces some problem solving wrt map navigation. it's kind of a pain in the ass but it's definitely there unlike 4. 3 also has some good bosses, and the least annoying endgame by quite a bit whereas 4's endgame is the worst of all which is truly amazing how they managed to regress so far on something as simple as "don't put a massive grind wall at the very end of the game to pad length"

For some reason there's this insane bias towards Prime 1. Seems like it's the same effect Ocarina of Time has where both games were MASSIVELY OVERRATED by the press at the time, which generated this intense cult-like following for both games. Prime 3 is a straight up improvement over Prime 1 in many ways. Yes a downgrade in some ways, particularly its focus on cutscenes, but it is not at all a clear cut "Prime 3 is the worst one because it has more cutscenes" situation. Objectively speaking, the only thing that's really "wrong" with Prime 3 is Hypermode being overpowered. It is a much, much more fun game to replay and backtrack through than Prime 1. The combat is better, the controls are better, the art is better, a lot of the level design is better, it has some of the best bosses in the trilogy...Prime 2 only beats out Prime 3 by having fewer cutscenes (ie. a more true Metroid atmosphere) and being harder (particularly having some better puzzles and use of Morph Ball). And yet people will tell you Prime 1 is the better game for no other reason than nostalgia + fat gamer hate of motion controls.
