What is the greatest game in this genre?
What is your favorite, even?
Metroidvanias thread.
>>
They're all the same game so I guess I'll just go by setting and protag likability and that winner goes to nine sols so far.
>>
The big 4 are
>SotN
The godfather of all metroidvanias, the one game every good metroidvania takes as a base but hardly ever comes close to reach its glory, you must play it out of respect.
>Ender Lilies
A new classic and a worthy spiritual successor of SotN, beautifully crafted.
>Rabi-Ribi
The gameplay above all else with this one, it can adapt to any player from the most casual to the most masochistic hardcore and give them what they are looking for: FUN
>Nine Sols
Perfectly balanced, the game sets an impossibly high bar for new metroidvanias, good story, good combat, good exploration, good music.
>>
>>730629498
What game?
>>
>>730629498
La-Mulana. Anyone who says otherwise is wrong.
>>
>>730629498
My favorite is probably Blasphemous.
Shame they fucking butchered the sequel to be "accessible"
>>
la mulana is the only good one
>>
How come there has been a castlevania metroidvania but not a metroid metroidvania
>>
>>730632165
This.
Super Metroid set the foundation, SotN was a good iteration of it, but La-Mulana took the genre to its extreme. No other game has ever been as daring as that fucking monument.

>>
>>730632736
Combat is faster because "DURR COMBAT TOO SLOW" so now all the deliberate weight and heft behind your swings are INSTANT
platforming is easier and floatier because "DURR MOVEMENT TOO SLOW, PLATFORMING TOO HARD" and now the deliberate speed and weight are faster and more aligned with farted out anime slop, much like the fucking artstyle that was ruined for budget.
B1 is this sick atmospheric contemplative type game where the player is absorbed into the world
B2 is an apology for that

You mean the game that took Super Metroid as a base?
>>

You're treading dangerous ground here anon

Super Metroid > SOTN though
>>
>>730635857
he said godfather not grandfather
>>
>>730635925
Yeah but Super Metroid is the base, not SotN. SotN doesn't really do anything new other than introduce a bunch of poorly implemented RPG stat nonsense that almost no metroidvanias copied - all it did was create the precedent that Metroid doesn't have a monopoly on the gameplay style and that it's now a genre and not just a singular franchise.
>>
Metroidvania was a perfectly good way to describe these games until people insisted that Hollow Knight not only was one but was the best one. Now it's just a fancy word for a side scrolling action adventure.
>>

I'm gonna give a genuine hot take, Super Metroid controls kinda eh. Way too floaty.

on one hand i feel like nine sols should arguably be closer to soulsvanias but it would also be a disservice to the other soulsvanias
Its literally just completely DS3-style railroaded action game and in that regard its really pretty further from being that much of a metroidvania other than having an interconnected world. It genuinely sacrifices like 90% of whats particulary good about the genre and doesnt even actually use sidescroller movement in its combat very much because hitboxes dont matter 3/4 of the time
but on the other hand you also cant really lump it with the other "soulsvanias" because the others are more DS1/DS2/DES style that actually play around the *overlaps* of those genres
>>
>>730636987
goddamnit anon
>>
>>730636674
But hollowknight is a metroidvania.
>A map where you can go to different directions and meet a dead end.
>the powerups not only unlock new areas but they affect gameplay.
>has collectionables and upgrades you need to find.
Just because it adapted a brush of dark souls with the gloom doom kingdong and the stupid stain after death, it still closer to an igavania than dark souls.
>>
>>730636987
They are more precise than any other game in the series. If you don't feel they're snappy it's because you're playing it that way.
>>
>>730638405
>stupid stain after death
being able to pogo off of your shade and reach new places is absolutely awesome, they made that feature actually thinking of their own game instead of just ripping off dark souls
Thats pretty much the reason why HK is so much more liked than the other souls-clone vanias, and also why i genuinely believe team cherry when they said they didnt know of dark souls when making Hollow Knight. Thats literally it, actually come up with your own mechanics that actually fit your game. Unlike all the others that shit up their game with something like a retarded estus flask healing system that blows dick for the combat and exploration they are making. And then it gets compared to souls so much because turns out the way to actually best emulate what people loved about DS1 isnt just copypasting the mechanics
>>
>>730632975
>B1
>deliberate
you wouldn't know the difference between deliberate and weighty vs anime and floaty if it was staring to your face. B1 was floaty and anime, it was simply badly made at that. It never pretended to be zweihander soulshit. You are just coping cause you want this shi to be intentional
>>
>>730638364
>combat and bosses
>hollow knight
they couldn't even figure out you shouldn't rapidly move bosses with no tells in a game with touch damage bruh
>>
>>730638550
i dont entirely agree with the other anon but this is deranged
theres literally nothing about anime about blasphemous 1

i genuinely believe the shallow slowness of B1 constantly blows dick (its possible to make slowness interesting) but blasphemous 1 is literally the definition of deliberate
>zweihander soulsshit
do you realise 1/3 the people play ds1 with fast attacking weapons and ninja flips
>>
>>730638617
90% of bosses who can suddenly move have tells if you arent blind
no excuse for exceptions like godtamer
if you wanna complain about contact damage you need to look at silksong where its actually abysmal, in HK1 its a non issue most of the time
>>
>>730629498
What is the game in OPs pic?
I'm a level designer in my studio and want to take more inspiration from other games to help make sure my stuff isn't boring or too repetitive.
>>
>>730638546
>stain after death
isn't good mechanic for a metroidvania where you can miss the map at all, or metroidvania where you can get stuck on a boss. Sure they may have came up with the classic wow/diablo/everquest corpse run toooootally on their own but they clearly didn't understood the consequences of it.
>>
>>730638697
>most of the time
and i t was never fixed and lead us to silksong. So yeah team cherry are full of shit and don't get basic combat design fundamentals and only reason 1 is tolerable is cause they were referencing megaman more
>>
>>730638726
it would be a problem if geo was like an EXP system but it isnt
the consequence is that it gave you some pressure and concern about dying and doesnt let you just kill yourself to fast travel 24/7 while still not being too punishing, its infinitely more rewarding to push into uncharted territory than worry about your shade like a bitch
>where you can get stuck on a bos
bosses usually leave their shade outside of the arena so you can get it back and move on with your life without being eternally trapped to it, worst case scenario you can probably blast it before entering the arena in question

>miss the map at all
are you unable to remember paths with your brain
i can imagine several problems related to missing the map but the shade is not one of them
>>
>>730638649
ah yeah extremely fast hollow knight swings, wannabe pogo and fancy magic are totally not as anime as blasphemous 2. How is mea culpa at all more different than whatever sword you use in 2? And yeah both have extremely big floaty instant jumps that aren't animated with any weight.
>>
>>730638726
>they clearly didn't understood the consequences of it.
I think they did, seeing how they put in a vendor that'll bring your shade to you.
>>
>>730638780
>So yeah team cherry are full of shit and don't get basic combat design fundamentals
"muh combat design fundamentals" nigger they made infinitely more dynamic and interesting lategame boss movesets to the point everyone fellates them
"understanding combat design fundamentals" is the kind of shit i hear from people praising braindead parryslop or bossfights made for geriatric boomers where you respond to every single move in the exact same way
>>
Alien Quest Eve is the best pornographic metroidvania.
>>
>>730630014
Nine Sols is a great game but it puts combat over exploration by a country mile. The only reason why it feels even remotely comparable is because games like Metroid only give you missiles or power bombs for exploring while Nine Sols gives you Jades, 80% of which you'll never use, and because the degree of exploration is significantly lower.
>>
>>730638849
>wannabe pogo
blasphemous' pogo mechanic is literally irrelevant in 99.99% of its gameplay and you can hardly actually use it in combat
>fancy magic
having supernatural elements doesnt mean your game is braindead or anime territory, are you incapable of understanding nuance
>extremely fast hollow knight swings
now im wondering if you even played the game
they technically come out as fast, but even by default youre stuck in an animation for much longer and it completely roots you
And then you realise your initial slashes deal dogshit damage and what matters is your finishers, which are much slower with much more endlag

I sentence you to spending 90 hours playing some dumb shit like Stellar Blade so you find out what anime garbage combat actually means

im sorry that you cant comprehend a game having true nonlinearity instead of being another railroaded baby game. I hope you dont get utterly raped by bilewater in silksong
>>
>>730639071
by default in blasphemous you have a 3 hit combo where the third strike is quite harder, you spend a while slashing at the enemy to reach it for a good chunk of damage
later on you unlock three options for the 4th attack that hit even harder (basically same purpose as 3rd but stronger / uppercut swing that sends you upwards / spinning slash which hurts the most but is the slowest)

if you cant land those then your damage with the sword is going to blow dick

>refuse to check cornifers' shop at your nearest stag station for this to happen
you need to find stag stations. Which means backtracking to crossing paths and taking the one you didn't. Or you enter every room, kill all enemies, and check every exit before deciding with which to go? I just go the random one. So i miss benches, stag stations, maps etc etc.
>or you could go somewhere else if you felt unprepared for it
I WAS LITERALLY EVERYWHERE except the dark place when i've lost my money. There was literally no other option than to grind for lantern.
>>
>>730639197

This is starting to sound unlikely in literally any area other than deepnest

>I WAS LITERALLY EVERYWHERE except the dark place when i've lost my money. There was literally no other option than to grind for lantern.
This doesnt make sense on a fundamental level
By the time you are able to go to deepnest, the game completely opened up and you can clear out every single major zone in the game before deepnest is "the only place left to go"
At which point both 1800 geo/owning the lantern is something you certainly already have, or youre so overpowered for deepnest that you cannot possibly be concerned about losing your shade in there
>>
>>730639417

>mindlessly parry shit to death and barely care about hitboxes is deliberate
being heavy is not what makes a game deliberate

you don't need lantern for deepnest? You need it for sewer place. I beat deepnest as the final area and needed to go to sewers.
