im not sure if it counts as "semi-open" but Mario 64 levels. a sort of "playground" like "area".
Thats my favorite, but i also like linear mixed in.

(and something linear, that appears like a playground area. the best example would be Zelda OoT. Semi open area, hyrule field (but hyrule feild is trash, nothing like a Mario64 level) linear sections that connect to "linear dungeons, that "feel" like open playgrounds.)

RPGs kind of do this on rare occasions. semi open areas; towns, overworld, some dungeons. then some linear sections, hallways/corridors between dungeons and other maps, and some dungeons.

but newer RPGs tend to either be nearly fully "empty open world" or "hallway simulator", with almost nothing inbetween. (and the few "inbetween, have some terrible level design/mix, such as e33. world map is meh, acceptable, better than most modern games, but dungeons are a slog, tedious, and boring as fuck)

What's Elden Ring?
I like that one, the game is ABSOLUTELY very linear and it railroads you a lot, with straigh up pointing you where to go and if you stay in the path you will clear all the questlines, but is has huge side areas to explore that are completely optional

Open worlds require less design, you can get away with vast expanses of dead space, where you can "find" shit but this shit you find is just kinda there but isn't all that important(Elden Ring, Bethesda shit) or some collectable(BotW, ubisoft clones) and you never visit again, with subdividing the gameplay into little pockets of activities that resemble a checklist of activities(ubisoft clones, Yakuza), or with making a big mostly unremarkable sandbox where wander around and mess with NPCs(GTA and RDR)
Then you have the absolutely pointless "make you own fun" slop that is Minecraft, its clones and every survivalcrafter like Ark and The Forest, where you completely remove the "game" part of the video game and just make it into a virtual lego playset. They're fine entertainment but they're lesser as games.
The point is, actually designing a stage with open ended objective which you can achieve through a variety of means, a challenging dungeon with individual character to each, and everything else that falls under "level design", takes actual DESIGN to entice players. With an open world you can half ass your level design and just slap some POIs in a big procedurally generated map and call it a day.

I think there have been too many open world games in the past so I do agree that we need more linear games again. But if done right (and most don't) an open world can be good and enhance the experience. Though I am kind of fatigued by open worlds so I am glad that Pragmata is a linear game, the only question that remains, have they found the perfect length for the game. I hope it's at least as long as RE4R, that game had a really good length.
