Assault could've been better, it could've been worse. Command went psychotic with alternate story scenarios and NOT rail shooter gameplay. The first mission against Andrew is classic 64 before the Aparoids invade and fuck everything up. Nintendo just kept trying to innovate again and again without having a solid foundation to fall back on, not understanding what people liked about the series.Like, imagine if Metroid Dread never released. That game doesn't do a ton of innovation, there's stealth segments and Samus actually vocalizes, but otherwise it's not too different from the other 2D Metroid games. But that game, as solid as it was, got a foot in the door for attention to the Metroid franchise again, which kickstarted interest in Prime 4.
