Everyone got excited for it because of Crisis and the idea that you could have freedom.
But all we ended up with is a lot of walking around and ubislop design.
They will never go back because you can run any room or corridor shooter with amazing lever of detail on a 1050ti.
But you can't set up events or triggers in open world.
You can't increase the npc intelligence without it feeling unfair since you got shot from God knows where.
The amount of work necessary to fill up worlds is insane and the player would just skip most of it.
Open world looks good to them because people with nothing to do want endless games just to waste the time.
