I like permanent progression in roguelikes. Sure it's scrubby, but it's fun.

What's your favorite rougelite?
>>
>>730643147
i'm really into warriors abyss right now
>>
Permanent progression is not what "roguelite" means. Stop spreading this false info retardation.

>>730643856
This one hasn't. A vocal minority of retards are just wrong.
>>
>>730643890
ask 100 gamers what the difference between a roguelike and a roguelite is. the answer will shock you
>>

You're free to proud of being wrong for some reason but it doesn't change the fact hat you're wrong

I like that it solves the large item pool problem by letting you specialize in brands. The ascension system is better too, letting you select which ones to turn on.
>>
>>730644828
That game is amazing. I was avoiding it for a while but when I finally got into it I was instantly hooked.
Anyways, atm I'm playing Shape of Dreams.

Are rougelites the games where you make permanent progress?
I don't like rougelikes because progress isn't permanent and it restarts each run

Also my favorite is Crypt of the Necrodancer
>>
>>730643827
What you call roguelikes are traditional roguelikes now
What you'd call roguelites are the new roguelikes
What I'd call shitty grindslop with doomed runs designed to have you constantly bash your face on a wall until you buy enough upgrades to statcheck your way to victory are called roguelites
>>
>>730643147
Games that reward you for loosing are peak zoomerslop

I've been playing Morsels every now and again. I just love the artstyle. Reminds me of TOBACCO

>>730643147
>most of the guns suck in ETG and ammo is more important than health
>most of the upgrades in hades are stupid and some things are locked behind character interactions causing meaningless runs to happen
>you finally get giga strong and they set a heat cap

Perma progression isn't necessarily scrubby, most people just implement it in a stupid way. I liked Rogue Legacy 1.
>>
>>730645421
"Roguelite" is just a term invented to distinguish between true roguelikes and stuff like Binding of Isaac/Spelunky/etc. that has the procedural generation and permadeath features from roguelikes but applied to other, usually real time genres. The notion that "roguelite" defines something with permanent progression is false and isn't even that widepread of a misnomer so the "hurr definitions change over time" retards are wrong too.
>>
>>730643593
How is it? I like roguelites and I've been a fan of the DW sloppa since 3. I think it originally slipped under my radar and now I've got too many things coming out relatively soonish to go buy it now, but it'll definitely stay on my list if it's any good.
>>
>>730645661
God I fucking love Spelunky, it's too bad I'm tired and that's definitely not it lol
>>
i liked dead cells i guess
>>
>>730643147
Permanent progression in roguelike is bad design though.
>No upgrades
>The game is way too hard and sometimes unfair
>Some upgrades
>The game is now normally hard
>Max upgrades
>The game is now easy
It's basically you changing the game's difficulty from hard to easy, but require you to grind for it and make you think you achieved something, but in reality, you're just changing the game's difficulty.
>>
>>730645649
I don't think it's scrubby, I just think it's retarded design and it's something that feels like it's wasting my time instead of being actual game design. If I boot up a game and it's balanced in such a way that it's intending to be impossible until I die enough times, me playing the game at that point is meaningless and it's accomplishing nothing but wasting my fucking time.

Something like an RPG is different because you're progressing through one run of a game and are playing through different parts when you're at different spots on the power curve. Meanwhile these dog shit games just force you to die a bunch of times before the difficulty is actually designed to be enjoyable and possible.
>>
>>730645661
We're fighting a losing battle anon. The games I grew up with that were called Adventure games are now called "metroidbrainias". People call every online game an MMO even though the first M stands for Massively and denotes a specific amount of players sharing a gamespace at one time. We can't win against people becoming dumber.
>>
>>730644392
>FGC niggers still mad they lost to Smash
Forever funny.
It is one and you'll cope over it till you die.
>>
Isaac doesn't have permanent progression. It has unlocks, and most of those unlocks make the game worse to play by dilluting treasure room, boss room, shop, secret room and deal room pools with garbage.
>>
>>730645809
It's in the image because it's a roguelite, OP is just a retard and doesn't know what "roguelite" means.
>>
>>730645809
permanent progression doesn't imply it should be better or should
so yes is has permanent progression
>>
>>730645846
Progress implies a positive growth. I don't think there's a word for a negative growth, but that's largely how Isaac's unlock system works.
>>
>>730645809
I don't know why I like Isaac so much though, because that game just feels outright spiteful sometimes. But the music and concepts are on point and there's really nothing quite like it, I like how morbid and raunchy it is and the biblical references are really cool I've always been a fan of Christian imagery in otherwise sacrilegious media, even though all the angel stuff is good and yadda yadda. I just know if I ever see Ed out in public it's on sight though. That piece of shit has fucked me too many times.
>>
>>730645809
>loot pool is tainted with trash items as you play more
Fucking hate games that do this. How dare they make the game harder the more I play? That is fucking bullshit.
>>
>>730645802
if they were the same genre you wouldn't need to separate them like you just did
>>
>>730643147
> game gradually gets easier, independently of you skill
I don't get why low IQs enjoy this.
>>
>>730646120
The majority of games aren't designed to actually engage your brain any more, they are just dopamine drip feeds that occupy your time by telling you how good of a job you're doing

I've been playing Ravenswatch. Unfortunately I think it's only fun with friends, I'd like to see more roguelites to follow in Night Reign's footsteps. But I've been a fan of time constraints like Dead Rising though, gives me a reason to keep it moving. Night Reign was pretty fun too, I just wish Souls combat felt better and the map was more random

I've never encountered a video game with a birth rate crisis before.

>Entire wide genre is better at attracting new players than a single game

Wow you are like a rocket scientist to have noticed that.
>>
>>730646867
There are plenty of individual fighting games more dead than Smash.
>>
>>730645775
That does suck and it is scrubby because it tricks the player into thinking that he's improving when in reality it's just furtive skillmaxxing

If roguelites had a solid post-game or went full steam ahead with the infinite customized skill it wouldn't be that bad, but like the Hades example the game just locks you off from going full heat and forces a shitty weapon on you to continue.
>>
>>730643147
FTL. My absolute favorite used to be Spelunky back in the day, so it's also worth mentioning. These days I like to play the Firaxis XCOM games on Impossible with Ironman on, which makes them play a bit like roguelikes because of the permadeath, difficulty, and bullshit RNG.
>>
balatro
vampire survivor is probably the most fun at first but it gets solved fast
hades is pretty fun. didn't play 2 yet

isaac, noita, and brotato are garbage tho

Cope
You could apply this to Street Fighter 5/6 only and I would still be right
>>
I like Nubby's Number Factory. The artstyle reminds me of Kid Pix on my uncles computer
>>
>>730645731
its excellent, extremely big bang for your buck.
>>
>>730645758
Valid point, though, you can also say that on paper it's more like an RPG where you unlock personalized upgrades and make earlier stages easier, until you're capable of reaching the final boss.

I really don't like permanent progression in roguelikes. Are any good action roguelikes with no progression?
>>
>>730644828
>girl protag

>>
>>730643147
There's a difference here.

In Hades your main character actually gets stronger stats with the tokens you collect on each run.

In Isaac and Gungeon you unlock new items over runs. Your starting stats remain the same, but you have greater access to stronger upgrades if you play effectively.

All three games unlock harder modes and toggled challenge modes.

But then there's also games like Rogue Legacy and Dead Cells where your starting stats are MASSIVELY influenced by the tokens you collect across multiple runs.

Personally I find that the games more like Rogue Legacy end up feeling more shallow and more about just grinding up the upgrade tokens rather than interacting with the combat mechanics. Grinding up character power seems more entertaining in a game that is all about that specific aspect like Diablo/Path of Exile, where a roguelite action game seems more fulfilling if it's about actually getting comfortable enough with the combat to win runs reliably.
