Sure I'll try something because it's popular, but that's as far as it goes. I've never extensively played something just because other people are playing it when I got no enjoyment out of it, that's silly. Video games are just toys. Digital poseable action figures. You're supposed to be having fun.
I have forced myself (several times) to play earlier games in a series when I was really only interested in a later entry because I like playing in release order.
