Unironically what's the appeal of this game?
>>
Infinite grinding so you feel like you're always making progress. The quests are really unique when it comes to MMOs too, and a lot of them are quite good. Not good enough to make up for being menial task simulator for me, though.
>>
>>730648064
game that isnt quite engaging enough to play on its own so you have it on one monitor while you put a youtube video that isnt good enough to justify watching it on its own on the second monitor

I never played RS seriously, but I remember the few times I did play it, all I really did were things like fishing, chopping trees, mining blacksmithing etc. It was oddly comforting and satisfying to do
Are there any other games that has that same feel?
>>
>>730648064
It was an interactive social media platform that also doubled as a video game. Kids loved it because it was literally MSN or Skype but set in a virtual fantasy world.
Ease of access was also the big reason. You could run it in any web browser without having to install it and it was free to play. The only other big RPG games that were like this were what, Adventure Quest Worlds and Sherwood Dungeon?
The only other non-shit MMORPG at the time was WoW. RS had much better quests and much more charming and memorable music.

>>730651747
Any "comfy" harvesting game made for women fits that criteria.
But you can always replay Runescape itself by just playing 2009scape or 2006scape which can also be played fully offline if you're only looking for singleplayer.

No anon is right, a big part of the appeal was the unique quests. The game had a pleasant sense of humor throughout as well. This is speaking for the game as it developed originally many years ago.
What would possess a person to play it in modern day? For the nostalgia while the fool covers your eyes and ears at more and more things, or as a misguided zoomer/gen alpha pretending to be nostalgic about a game they have no authentic connection to. The second reason is also why so many zoomers fetishize CRT monitors in retro games

When I was younger, my family computer was severely underpowered and had shitty internet connection. that's basically what brit humour was until certain things happened to the country
>>
>>730657061
Yes. There was a noticeable decrease in bots and general bullshit across the whole game when the Maduro thing was going on because the US was doing some EW black magic for a few hours. It's not just bots, they also make up a large proportion of gold farmers and have basically made the entire wilderness unusable for real players. At one point they basically formed a game-wide cartel at the Rev caves, one of the most profitable pieces of content in the game at the time, and were able to push out even PKer clans.

IP banning all of Venezuela would be the single best thing osrs could do for its long term health.

I tried it for a month recently just to see what the deal was. The quest content was interesting (even if it felt like you were being punished for not looking up what items you need ahead of time), and I can see why the skilling loop would be satisfying, but for me it just completely broke down at the part where I needed to play it as a piece of interactive software.
The basic act of walking anywhere was miserable, the limited inventory creates loads of extra tedium, and all of the "advanced" aspects of the combat (prayer flicking, toggling overheads, hardswapping gear) just look obnoxious.

It was before discord and social media. So when you were a 10 year old and booted it up into a world of magic and monsters and American Psycho children trying to lure you into the woods the sense of scale was awesome. I have no clue why people would be playing it now.
>>
>>730658640
over 20k hours in this game and I have never enjoyed a single grind. If there isn't some unseen force making you spend hours grinding for the number to go up you are a lucky dog.
>>
>>730658753
I'm not saying it does.
I'm just saying that I'm less inclined to slog through the early game when the mechanical aspects of the late game don't look enjoyable.
>>
>>730658896
>I have no clue why people would be playing it now.
only insane grinders play it consistently now, you have some casuals who make an account, do some quests, and then quit, but they're not the "conventional" community
it's mainly just poopsockers
>>
>>730658915

>>
>>730658964
>the mechanical aspects of the late game
You don't actually need to flick for anything at all and swapping attack styles according to phase is a genre staple. All you are missing is on a few kills per trip and your hands will be everthankful to you in the future.
Yeah it's cool to know there are Lvl-3 combat legit firecapes and people who can do 20 infernos in a row without banking once or perfectly flick until the logout timer expires in infinte jad mode out there but letting those poopsockers be the thing that sap your interest in the game is just ridiculous.

The tick system is very unique and allows for mechanically interesting combat. Higher level PvM (and PvP) are nothing like how they used to be. It all feels rather clumsy until you get used to it, and then the game turns into a nice hybrid between MMORPG and rhythm game. It's satisfying. Of course it also does a ton of MMO things really well, but you'd discard those things as "meaningless".

I personally don't like Jagex's implementation of it, specifically all the "be on this exact tile on this exact tick or you're dead" content, but I like how they embraced it as a feature instead of being the assholes the Gowers would have been about it if it was discovered, or at least widespread to today's extent during their reign.

Man you missed out on the worst launch in recent memory. Skills don't transfer between levels, no skill interacted with another and XP curves that make release date farming blush.
And the worst part is that since skills are independent islands between them the kill red bird to kill blue bird to kill yellow bird feels completely meaningless and the idiot couldn't even realize that after 8 years of dev time.

>>730660746
It's bad. Really bad. Their lead dev has publicly insulted everyone telling him the game is bad, basically saying the game isn't being developed or designed for players to actually enjoy. It's not supposed to be fun. It's not supposed to have quality of life. The whole thing is basically an excuse for Gower to hang out with his bros and keep them on his payroll, not to become a functional game.

Brighter Shores? Tried it a bit, levelling skills felt meaningless as it just meant that you "upgraded" the item you where getting from something anyway, like if you went fishing and levelled up then you don't need to eventually go somewhere else for better fish, you just stay right where you are and those fish will scale to your fishing level. Also the world felt really enclosed as it is just a collection of screens stapled next to each other and not in a good way, felt awkward to try to navigate when your choices for stuff to do felt like it was intended to be a bit more open than what the map allowed.

I've been playing RS on and off since 2004, and i treat the as a single player game with some MP elements. I barely interact with people anymore just grind, quest, and do activities. This game has better quest than every other MMO I've tried and funny writing to keep me going. Thats all I need and its always there for me when I get the bug.
