Why did Tactical RPGs die?
>>
why do you make the same thread every time

Well for an instance, this looks like soulless shit so that might have contributed.

Triangle Strategy was aight. I haven't played that new Metal Slug one yet, is it any good?
>>
>>730654428
A Final Fantasy Tactics remake came out last year. A Tactics Ogre remake and Triangle Strategy both came out in 2022. Fire Emblem games come out every few years or so. The genre is far from dead.
>>
>>730654428
Because 99% of them don't have perma death and offer optional infinite grinding, making them literally just generic turn based JRPGs with extra steps

What are some must plays other than Final Fantasy Tactics and the GBA Fire Emblems?
>>
>>730654548
Not really. It's trying to be Into the Breach while looking like Tactics Ogre, and it fails in both regards. I enjoyed it, but it definitely wasn't worth whatever I paid for it. I would have said wait for a humble bundle, but I think it's in the current one. I'm too lazy to check. If it's in a bundle, don't pause. But don't go and buy it either.

If you want a strategy focused game just play HoI3 bro. You are in the thread for narratives with turn based gameplay sections that are just barely enough of a challenge to keep you awake. I'll add the 3DS ghost recon xcom knock off to the list too

For me this was the classic case of "shit games /v/ tricked you into playing".
One of the dullest SRPG I've played with with boring combat, dumb story and meh characters. Also you can't save the actual best girl.

Larian games are excellent dungeon crawlers, so I’m excited to see what the new games combat will bring to the table when it comes to turn based design.
>Larian rpg's as a whole feel like a modern evolution of the tactical RPG genre
Their systems director in the latest AMA said that they try hard to keep turn based combat innovative and in competition with the industry at large. Thats why you feel that way.
>>
>>730654428
from my perspective, they aren’t challenging enough and they often are extremely tropey with generic art style.
When they can break away from those conventions and actually think about designing a tactics game without relying on copying others, its usually fun.
>>
>>730654428
didnt a final fantasy tactics remake and unicorn overlord come out fairly recently?

Is Solasta good
Solasta 2 EA out in a couple months as well
>>
>>730656309
nah they are not excellent. Theme park rides with generic themes. Thats why the majority of players give up after the first act.
DOS2 was in fact just friendslop that got popular due to kinda weak co-op
The very fact that you can claim they are “excellent” is more a reflection on the lack of options than the game itself.
>>
>>730654428
genre's too niche so only low budget games are viable and modern devs only want to go for blockbusters

Oh, another 3fag. BG3 is better than 1 and 2 and IWD by a league. Its better than most CRPGs and tactical rpgs too
>>
the problem with convallaria was the powercreep on the units has been kind of nuts.
launch units were balanced
nowadays you have the KING Camelot stomping across the field, Geralt with huge melee AoEs, Judge Samantha/Triss/Yen with huge ranged aoes, Ciri the queen of knockback cheese...but hey at least Maitha gets in a badass robot (SOON)

Very strange post. For how long those games are, they have great player retention. The co op is fun and unobtrusive, describing it as “friend slop” is just weird.

>>730657573
Not him, but tabletop mechanics don’t work well in video games in general. I really feel for Larian when they say they get to design a system used for video games finally. Working with tabletop limitations was their main complaint with BG3’s development.

What's your top 3 tactical games discounting japslop? For me
1. Battle Brothers
2. XCOM Enemy Within
3. Divinity Original Sin 2
>>
>>730656454
It's good honestly. I'm an outsider to the JA series so take my opinion with some salt.
Tactically the enemy is pretty basic, but I like the way that armour influences your free moves and perks can influence that even more. The different builds are honestly pretty fun and there's a few different effective ways to play, so it doesn't feel like it railroads you into a meta. The mutators you can add on a new game are fun too.
The story is a little generic, there's a soft timer that you need to be mindful of in the early game, you should move to clear the first proper island & side objectives as quickly as you can because that soft timer will lock you out of several side quests if you don't, but once you've done that mad dash the game opens up.
Some characters are kind of annoying to listen to, others feel very flat but have good skills. There's enough good characters that I feel like you can build several squads without feeling like you have to take someone you hate. NPC wise there's this air of them not taking themselves seriously a lot of the time, you definitely feel that the devs liked the satire elements a lot and they really emphasize that in JA3, I think it's a little corny at times but there's also some genuine moments that hit really well for me with the music being really strong too.

Western TRPG

Japslop TRPG

chinkslop

better balance and gameplay is a general improvement
3d models look worse than sprites
characters are less reactive (probably due to va costs) and you have less storylines/banter when it comes to side characters

This one looks pretty cool.
Also, anyone play Dice Gambit? How is it?
>>
>>730659438
I've never played a worse TRPG, literally brainless enemy AI that skip turns or suicides half the time.
Most units are borderline useless because of the badly balanced AP system or will fullfill incorrect roles (lancers clear mines because resistance to explosions, shocktroopers kill tanks because penetration).
If you care about rank then you'll scout rush, if you don't then you'll slowly push the frontline while enemy barely responds.
I haven't played 4 but I played 2 and while it had a few pleasant additions like new units, nerfed orders, different objectives; it still had the same crappy AI that suicides or skips turns.
picrel is probably one of the most amusing ones I've seen.
>>
>>730660332
It's okay.
>>
1. Battles too long. Zoomers gonna zoom.
2. Too many titles that required basically no "tactics" to speak of.
3. Devs who got adventurous got punished (see vandal hearts 2)
4. Shining Force 3, maybe the best one ever, got locked on the Saturn
5. Less money for games development in general. The boom ended and more niche genres died in general.
>>
tactical rpgs are something you play once and then the gimmick is overplayed unless you are some super autist who becomes obsessed with one gametype

Not sure who this weird little subgenre is meant to appeal to. Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Tactics will always have a special place in my memory for their dialogue and artstyles, but they're not exactly revolutionary, interactive gameplay experiences that make me want to replay them over and over.
Let me know when Japan figures out what the fuck the RP and G stands for and develops one instead of a borderline VN with less player involvement than a Telltale production.
