This has to be the most anime JRPG ive ever seen. Every line of dialogue reads like some generic bad shonen dialogue and no character talks or acts like an actual human being

From what I understand the localization isn't the best. Aside from that, I dont understand the praise this is game is getting for it's remake. The story is entirely bland with virtually zero character development, the open world areas are a joke and nothing of consequence ever happens.

Well yeah it originally came out in 2004 , it was the first of it's kind at least in the 2000s , every modern jrpg trope probably came from the original game The quest system was revolutionary as well back then This is the literal game equivalent of "it gets better 40 hours in" , the second chapter is much better in every single way

For example when you get to the hotsprings town you go to the inn and the game makes you go upstairs to the hotel room to “drop your luggage off” then you go out to the hotspring for a cutscene. It should just skip to the cutscene. It’s not a huge thing but there are a lot of parts like this and they add up
