For Sonic CD it might seem pointless to go to the future after you destroy the robot generator but good futures have tons of lives and easy ring collection which is useful when you're trying to get all time stones but more importantly good future layouts are almost always set up in a way that makes speeding through the zones easier since their level layouts are more open on average. Bad futures are punishments for not watching where you're going.
