You need Ability Spheres to buy spells and abilities on the grid, but they don't drop very often in the start of the game.

I have a weird problem with X-2, both times I've played it I got right near the end, stopped, and then when I tried to go back to it later I just couldn't get back into the groove. I'm not sure what it is, but I suspect it's something to do with my completionist nature and not wanting to play the game over again. I think next time I try playing it I'll try forcing myself to complete my current game and just do the second playthrough or something.
