>Giant mapsAs an early game example, every previous version had the tower immediately in view across the river, upon leaving the starting kingdom. In HD2D, you can't see the tower at all because it's out of view. This newer, larger world also means a lot more pointless walking and more random encounters. The NES, SNES, and GBC versions clearly didn't intend for this, and it makes me wonder how the rest of the game is affected.>Camera angleThe angle let's you see really far ahead north, but a very short distance south. It's lopsided. It's much more difficult to see south of you, and you have to resort to the minimap to know where you're going. If you could rotate the camera it wouldn't matter, but you can't.>Colors/DesignThis one might be just a nitpick, but the maps and overall presentation doesn't exactly pop for me. The environments just look messy and all over the place. Like it's trying too hard to look as exciting and flashy as possible, see pic related for a random example I pulled off YouTube. The SNES version just looks cleaner and more to the point. Maybe someone who's an expert in color theory or even map design can explain why, I have no idea.I rarely see anyone complain about this stuff and most people agree DQ1-3 remakes are all fantastic. What gives? The more I learn about game design, the more I see flaws in every remake, not just DQ. It's like devs don't understand the design philosophy the original creators were going with back then. Even if a remake is fine and playable, it's like they miss the point. If you've ever seen The Electric Underground's videos on "remake culture" I'm starting to understand what he means. It makes me wonder how other seemingly perfect remakes really are, such as the Trails in the Sky remake.
>>730699508nice essay man, next time just post a link to whatever eceleb trash you're trying to shill by making this thread
@730699838You tried, but I'm not falling for it.
>>730699508HD-2D is by far the most critically-acclaimed art style in modern /v/ history. Nearly everyone, like >>730699838, LOOOOOOOOOOVES this. Everyone praises it as the epitome of remakes. But it's not about the game itself, it's more about proving a point. You see, there's only so much we can hate at one time. We hate FF7R, which is a high budget full 3D remake, and these "HD-2D" asset flips are the opposite. So therefore, we MUST like the other thing, even if without FF7R, we'd hate it. And it doesn't matter what the original game's intent was, since retro games are now "uncslop" at best and "zoomerslop" at worst (yes, people have unironically started saying that retro games are for zoomers).
>>730699508Didn't read but HD2D is ugly as hell, and remakes are gay (without exception). There does not exist a good remake
>>730699508autism
My big problem with DQ1 at the very least is ironically it felt more like an RPG. DQ1 original flavors were less like RPGs and more like a giant puzzle box. You had a lot of places to explore to figure out where you were powerful enough to reach and figure out what to do and where to go. HD remake had a story that basically laid everything out then added 50 more bosses so every single time you sneezed in the game, you were fighting a new boss. Tons of them utter bullshit (Whoever made Armegedden and thought it was okay to make you face a boss that could on average regen more HP than your basic attack should be drug out into the street and shot.)
>>730699508Agree on the camera angle, it's pretty annoying.
>I rarely see anyone complain about this stuff and most people agree DQ1-3 remakes are all fantastic. What gives? DQfags aren't particularly hard to please, and I say this as one myself. That being said, I don't like HD2D, and I think the DQ remakes do the aesthetic worse than Octopath, which actually commits to it and puts far more effort into its presentation than DQ does. I hate how the characters look like they're gliding everywhere, or how the battles abruptly switch to first person in battle when EVERY OTHER HD2D game gave their characters animations in battle.
>>730699508>Trails in the Sky remakeThe only complaint with that one is that the script, even in the original JAP, removed perceived gender-role-reinforcing or some sexually-offensive comments towards women, but that just cements it was made for women. Though I never heard of this alleged love for DQ remakes. 45,357 peak? What? How come I never heard of this?
>>730703396It's not about the numbers, anon. It's about everyone that played it says it's a fantastic remake that is better than the older versions.
>>730704221It's so fantastic, nobody talks about it.
