Final Fantasy's appeal was always that it was really expensive to make and presented what could be called the first true "cinematic experience" in video games (ignoring FMV games and the like). SE has been trying to replicate that for years, the problem is that the west has totally taken over the market for movie games; far beyond anything Japan could ever produce. So they try to copy other gameplay systems they've seen be successful with other movie games and they fail because nuGod of War is still better at being a movie than any modern FF could ever hope to be. And no, going back to a classic JRPG combat system wouldn't "fix everything". It would please the fans who still care about FF but just like Expedition 33 the hype wouldn't actually match the real sales. No one cares about FF anymore because the franchises primary draw is done better elsewhere now.
What's annoying is that they have a rebuilt engine with the Pixel Remaster games.They could easily do non-mainline side FFs in te old style, similar to what FF Dimensions did.
